Ammonia Free, The Color of the Future Blonde, brunette, red … and green!

Every day thousands of women have their hair professionally colored. In fact, 54% of us color our hair regularly!  The hair color industry is ever changing, and ever growing - unfortunately environmental and immunity complications for salon clients is also on the rise. Much of this is due to the adverse effects of ammonia. Leaving the salon far from “refreshed,” clients end up with headaches, stinging eyes, trouble breathing, or a nasty rash. Conventional hair dyes usually contain ammonia, which is specifically designed to burn and degrade surfaces. Many products labelled as ammonia-free contain a substitute,  which is just as harmful as ethanolamine. However, a new breed of hair color is available - green, fumeless, non-damaging ammonia free hair color. We look at why Kasia Organic Salon and other inspiring natural beauty salons are using or considering using ammonia-free color.  As we know, it’s part of the future of beauty!

Kassie at Kasia Organic Salon educates hairstylists, aiming to rectify the lack of knowledge in the hairdressing profession about the color lines they use on a daily basis. “The future is now, and it's high time hair salons start using healthier options for themselves as well”, says Kassie Kuehl.

No Ammo! Why Conventional Color Just Doesn’t “Cover” It

The reasons for choosing an ammonia-free (and ammonia-substitute-free) hair color falls into three categories:

  • Your body's general health
  • The health of your hair
  • The health of your environment

General Body Health

Ammonia-based hair dye in colors like dark brown and black were linked by the National Cancer Institute in 1994 to greater incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple myeloma. A study published in 2001 by the International Journal of Cancer found that people who use permanent hair dye are 100% more likely to develop bladder cancer than those who use no permanent dye. 4-ABP is a known human carcinogen, and was recently found in off-the-shelf hair coloring products.

Hair Health

The characteristic flyaway and faded look that you see on heavily peroxided colored women, comes after long-term use of ammonia agents, thus leaving the hair’s cuticle open, making the hair resemble a dry and brittle.  The tyrosine within hair is also damaged by ammonia-based color, which affects the hair's ability to hold onto color.

When ethanolamine is used in hair color in order to gain 'ammonia-free' status, it needs to be included in concentrations up to 5 times that of ammonia. Ethanolamine is an 'adhesive' type chemical, which can never completely be washed out of your hair and off your scalp. After coloring your hair with ethanolamine-containing products, every time you wash your hair the water acts as a mild oxidizer, and incurs further damage on your hair. Fading and gradually developed dryness after coloring are usually attributable to ethanolamine.

Kasia Organic Salon’s color line uses an plant based alkaline agent that slowly swells the cuticle and controllably closes the cuticle back to it’s closest previous state.

Environmental Health

Over 6.2 billion ounces of harmful chemicals from shampoos and conditioners are washed down the drains and out into our water every day.

Leaving the salon retouched … and refreshed!

Educator and salon owner Kassie Kuehl, spurred by her own health reactions due to working with accumulated amounts of  fumes at the salon, built her foundations with Aveda. Now her own business, Kasia Organic Salon, offers fabulous color services so clients can enjoy their experience without inhaling noxious chemicals or irritated skin and scalp.

Hair Color with a conscious, is it for YOU?

Who should use ammonia-free hair color?

Anyone that is concerned with the volume of chemicals they ingest every day should look into natural, ammonia-free hair color. However, it is even more useful at some particular stages of life! Look up your nearest organic salon if you:

  • Are pregnant - Our enormous, clunky bodies are well-sensitized to environmental hazards. Tiny, unformed human beings are not so lucky. Avoiding chemical exposure is especially important when you are pregnant - but that doesn't mean you have to give up that flexibility with your looks!
  • Are covering greys - If your hair is losing (or has lost) its natural color, you'll be looking to color more often. With ammonia-free color, your hair doesn’t lose the ability to hold color and remains strong and healthy, rather than developing the characteristic frizzy, flyaway look.
  • Young or elderly - Younger and older people are especially sensitive to harsh chemicals. Natural hair color is particularly recommended for under-18s and over 60s.

A Beautiful Health Lifestyle - Where to Find Ammonia Free Hair Color

What is ammonia free?

Once you know the dangers of ammonia-based hair colors, those 'Ammonia Free!' labels sitting on the shelf right next to all the others look pretty tempting. Of course this is a better alternative in purchasing a shelf coloring product, but remember from our conversation above in manufacturers  discovered alternative, the ethanolamine.   Check for both ammonia and ethenolomine ingredients in any hair color you buy off the shelf.

What to do with your new, nutrient-rich color now that you have it?

Ask your hairstylist about after-care and everyday maintenance products that let you keep up with the natural snowball you've started rolling!

Harsh ingredients and harsh environments contribute to fading color.  By choosing the proper shampoos, conditioners and UV protected styling products will help prolong the life of color.  Avoid harsh ingredients  such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfates, and petrochemicals such as Propoline Gylcol and Parabens

The better the health and condition of your locks, the your color lasts, the springier your curls and the smoother and glossier your hair will be. Think of it as an investment in your investment. Let your hair feel as good as your conscience!

Natural Beauty is on the move!

There are a number of organic beauty salons growing across the country, where you can discover that your hair can be just as silky and glossy, your skin as vital and fresh, and your cosmetics just as potent and long-lasting, but without the harsh chemicals!

Brit gives 5 STARS! What to expect at Kasia Organic Salon

A Euphoric Experience at Kasia....

1/19/2011

I love trying new things, especially when it comes to my hair.  I knew I wanted a sassy cut and some highlights to brighten up the tresses, but I wasn't exactly sure what to describe beyond that.  When I told this to Colette, she lit up and look like she had a great plan in mind.  Well, she definitely did.  My cut is fantastic, the color is TDF, and I feel a sense of well-being knowing that all my fabulosity came with the use of natural products and without harsh chemicals.

Kasia is a full-service salon which means your stylist is also your colorist, if applicable. I learned they also have a full-time esthetician and acupuncturist and have recently been featured in Minnesota Monthly for their detox services.

Their interior is warm and inviting, quiet yet lively, and smells wonderful from both the products used as well as the four blends of tea they offer to their waiting clients.  The blueberry pomegranate was phenomenal and served in a tea ball (my fave) in a big mug.

After my cut and color service was complete, Colette offered me a complimentary makeup touch up to finish off the whole look.  Their products are from a line in California and have a variety of colors to compliment all skin tones.  I will definitely be back to purchase the lip gloss that she picked for me - it was long-lasting without being heavy or sticky.  Colette walked me through the descriptions of all the products she used for me, both hair and makeup, and wasn't pushy about purchasing anything.  Too bad I didn't have anywhere to go that night because I looked gooooood!!

When it is time to check out, keep in mind that Kasia is paperless so you would not receive a receipt and, therefore, no place to write in a tip.  You can let your stylist know to adjust the final bill to a total that includes the gratuity of your choice.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Kasia and would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat.

Waxing versus Shaving

Who is a good candidate for waxing?

If you are the type of person that hates spending the time shaving your legs, underarms and bikini area every other day and are prone to skin irritations like razor bumps and ingrown hairs than waxing is for you. To properly shave you need to soak your skin to soften and loosen the hair follicle, exfoliate the dead/dry skin cells away, use a moisturizing shaving lotion and shave.  This can take up to an hour to do your whole body.  Who has that kind of time time every other day??? In order to prevent bacteria from getting into the hair follicle you have to use a new razor every time you shave.  This can get very expensive fast if you are purchasing a quality razor that will give you the cleanest shave.

Waxing is the superior option to shaving because it will save you time, money and will nourish your skin's health by lessening the chance for ingrown hairs and exfoliates dead skin cells.  Waxing is a form of epilation that removes hair at the root of the hair follicle allowing the hair to grow back more slowly and less coarse. Most clients experience hair removal for 4 to 6 weeks.  Shaving is a form of depilation that removes the hair at or near the surface causing the hair to be blunt and start its growth cycle 1-2 days after shaving.

When is a good time to get waxed?

Winter is the best time to start on a waxing routine so that your legs, bikini and underarms are ready for the warm weather. Because our hair grows in 3 different cycles, we can train the hair to grow all at the same time by continually waxing every 4 to 6 weeks.  By the time Spring/Summer rolls around your legs, bikini and underarms will have less ingrown hairs, the hair will be less coarse and easier to remove and the hair will grow back slower allowing for hair free worry when wearing shorts, bikinis and tank tops.

Maintenence

Just like maintaining your hair color and style waxing takes regular visits every 4 to 6 weeks.  The savings that you will gain from not having to buy razors and shaving lotions and the time that you save will pay for itself after one waxing session.  In order to optimize waxing results between visits it is important to start exfoliation after 48 hours of being waxed to prevent the skin from growing over the hair follicle "ingrown hairs", nourish your skin daily with Jojoba oil and your favorite essential oil mix and most importantly not shave in between visits.  If shaving is done between waxing visits it starts the hair growth cycle from the beginning requiring more waxing sessions to get back on schedule.  If you have heard people say that waxing gets less painful each time you get waxed, this is true only if shaving is not performed in between waxing otherwise waxing will feel like the first time, everytime.

Spring/Summer 2011 Hair Color Trends

Spring/Summer 2011 Trend

Kasia Organic Salon  is getting the "ich" and taking the current month(s) in preparing and educating our team in how to bring you the hot off the press hair color trends for  SPRING

Brunettes The beautiful chestnut brown as seen on Jennifer Lopez will be huge this spring and summer months.  Creating a rich base with tons of shine and natural curl.  By adding beautiful light highlights close to the face creates an amazing glow.    The gradation of color as it gets lighter towards the ends keeps brunettes looking fresh and bright.

Redheads As we move into spring, redheads will become stronger, more rich and obvious.  Emma Stone is a great shade of red that makes her features pop.  as her seasonal inspiration. Luckily our Ammonia-free Color line at Kasia, does not fade like other 'red/color lines' do.   Dare to have some extra sass and personality.

Blondes Spring and summer, are about the "ombré style."  Drew Barrymore’s look will be a large  hit in  having a root area that fades into blonde creates a natural summer ‘at-the-beach’ feel.  Save on retouches by another week(s) and exchance your savings for great shampoo, conditioner, and treatments.
