Hair products containing toxic chemicals promote hair loss

Call Kassie today for a Free Consult on how to combat HAIR LOSS, most likely due to lifestlye, nutrition, and personal care use....

"Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is the dominant ingredient in almost all shampoos sold in traditional outlets such as supermarkets, drugstores and discount centers. In addition to having toxic effects on your immune system, SLS has been shown to corrode hair follicles and impede hair growth. It has been blamed for many cases of hair loss. The Material Safety Data Sheet provided by the U.S. government says exposure to SLS can lead to burning, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. The American College of Toxicology says SLS stays in the body for up to five days and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, brain, and lungs.

Over-treated hair is another cause of hair loss in women. Hair dyes, permanents, and relaxers do serious damage to the hair and scalp whether they contain lye or not. They are made with toxic chemicals that must be detoxified by the liver, and are identified by the immune system as foreign invaders. Thus health of the liver and the immune system are compromised by use of these products. When the liver is busy trying to detoxify an onslaught of foreign chemicals, estrogen metabolism may not be properly completed and breast cancer may be promoted. An immune system busy fighting off an invasion of foreign chemicals may not be able to prevent infection or identify and destroy abberant cells. Damage from dyes and relaxers can only heal when those potions are no longer used on the hair."

Glutathione, a Key Antioxidant and Anti-aging Factor

Did You Know?    Your Cells Can Produce Super Anti-Oxidant Enzymes

According to Dr Joe McCord, who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine four times, our cells have the ability to produce super anti-oxidant enzymes that can each eliminate up to "one million free radicals per second, every second, 24 hours a day", without being depleted!  This makes all other plant based anti-oxidant products pale in comparison - because one molecule of a plant derived anti-oxidant only eliminates one free radical molecule and they are both eliminated in the process.

Everything that eats has to go to the bathroom, including our body cells, and every cell that lives on oxygen has the byproduct of free radicals.  Our cells have a gene that can be "switched on" again so they can produce the same levels of super anti-oxidant enzymes as a healthy 20 year old, which is the same levels as found at birth!

The single most important factor in this understanding and slowing down of aging, is in the area of free radicals. Free radicals are reactive molecules found in the body.  They are produced by cells every time food is metabolized, by the immune system to fight infection, and by various types of toxins that one can be exposed to in day to day life.  Free radicals are unstable and their goal is to become stable by acquiring an electron. This results in a deleterious chain reaction. As one free radical becomes stable, another free radical is formed. This can be a real problem and eventually lead to accelerated aging and disease when the electrons grabbed, to stabilize free radicals come from cell membranes, mitochondria, DNA, and so on...

Substances called antioxidants, neutralize free radicals by donating their own electrons. Antioxidants normally come from our diet, but if our diet does not provide the body with specific vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients we will have difficulty quenching free radicals and we will experience oxidative stress. In other words, free radicals start outnumbering the antioxidants and start doing damage to the body.

Just as oxidation causes an apple to turn brown when exposed to air and metal to rust, oxidation causes the body to age. And poor dietary choices aren't the only contributing factors of oxidative stress. The following is a list of factors that impact levels of free radicals and the ability to deactivate their destructiveness:

* pollution,

* drugs,

* radiation,

* stress,

* trauma,

* injury,

* burns,

* and infection by viruses and bacteria.

There are many antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E, minerals like selenium and zinc, but the most powerful antioxidant of all is glutathione. An endogenous or intracellular antioxidant, it is found in every cell of the body. Other antioxidants are exogenous, meaning they come from outside sources, ie the food we eat. Glutathione, however, is manufactured within the cell using specific building blocks or precursors from food. The reason the glutathion is the key cellular antioxidant is that when other antioxidants become imbalanced after the loss of one of their electrons, glutathione neutralizes the danger and recharges the antioxidants by donating an electron. These spent antioxidants can once again go about their job protecting the body.

Results of a new peer-reviewed study published online in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine clearly demonstrates that the synergistic impact of the active ingredients used in the formulation of Protandim(R) dramatically increases the body's production of glutathione, a key antioxidant and anti-aging factor, as well as increases important antioxidant enzymes

Dr. Joe McCord, a co-author of the study, commented, "The results of this study may change how we view aging and the factors that impact healthy aging. Notably, glutathione, which is of particular interest to many disease researchers, was increased more than 300 percent with Protandim. Glutathione plays a key role in the immune system and when glutathione levels drop, a person's ability to fight disease also decreases. In addition to the findings on glutathione, the study also shows that Protandim delivers an antioxidant benefit to the body that exceeds those provided by vitamins E and C."

McCord added, "Contrary to popular belief, our bodies don't actually rely upon the intake of vitamins, such as C and E, to maintain proper antioxidant balance; rather we utilize a complex network of antioxidant enzymes to maintain health and protect against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is damaging to our bodies in that it is a major contributor to aging, weakened immune function, and over 200 diseases. In fact, the use of direct antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, as an effective way to reduce oxidative stress has been largely discredited in the past few years. Under some circumstances, vitamins such as C and E can actually promote oxidative stress rather than relieve it. Protandim(R) reduces oxidative stress by enhancing the body's entire network of antioxidant enzymes."

The study was conducted by scientists at the University of Colorado Denver and Ochsner Medical Center and illustrates that all five of Protandim's active ingredients contribute synergistically to the composition's activity, allowing it to work at low, pharmacologically attainable doses of each. Even low doses of Protandim were shown to induce human cells to increase their production of many antioxidant enzymes, and other anti-aging factors.

Best Tips for Makeup at Every Age

brown

IN YOUR 20s - Forget about less is more. You can really go for it.

Go for a bright red or mauve lip, experiment with a bold eye like Beyonce.  20’s are a time you can play with colors and get away with it.

IN YOUR 30s - The idea in your thirties is to be powerful. Find you own style and work it to bring out your best features.

Whatever your strong feature is, play with that. The rule of thumb is to choose one. If you have a strong eye, have a softer lip and vice versa. Color is in for Spring with beige, lt. olive, café, pinks, amethyst, blue to showcase the season.

On lips sheerer shades are always best because a deep tone can be aging as lips lose fullness. Use a lighter gloss to tone down any rich winter color.

IN YOUR 40s - It’s all about being classic. You have to think of it as a black cashmere turtleneck - it never goes out of style.

Avoid anything too trendy. Skip liquid foundation because it settles on wrinkles. Go for the tried and true…use lipstick, which never goes out of style, bronzer to enhance cheekbones and bring the skin alive, brow powder to create a lift in the eye area and always two coats of mascara.

Eye shadow - a sultry, neutral palette works best.  Add a pop of color in blue or green.

IN YOUR 50s - GO FOR THE GLOW!

A deeper foundation color and blush will warm up the skin and make you look younger.

Wear Natural Eye Makeup - Keep eyes fresh-looking with brown eyeliner instead of black—and stick to no more than one coat of mascara.

Always apply with a lighter touch wherever you are applying.

Do not use Matte powder - It makes one look like they’re wearing a mask, always go for the sheer luminating look – not shimmer.

IN YOUR 60sis all about soft colors and appropriate ingredients.

Don’t think that you have to highlight the eyes, or lips or cheeks. Applying makeup to more mature skin is all about a fresh, whole-face application that doesn’t highlight one particular area but flatters the whole face.

Less is more keeping skin moist with a bit of color will do the trick.

LA BELLA DONNA MINERAL MAKEUP

La Bella Donna is a revolutionary, pioneering concept in cosmetics: Minerals that behave like makeup. It is a complete collection of mineral-based formulas that are actually healthy for the skin because they are made from natural elements-mineral-based pigments for natural-looking colour and micronized Titanium Dioxide, a non-chemical sun block (SPF 20), for environmental protection. Iron Oxides provide the source of colour while Bismuth Oxychloride and Zinc Oxide act as anti-inflammatories. La Bella Donna products balance the moisture content of the skin, allowing it to breathe while blocking out the sun's harmful, damaging rays. They provide excellent coverage in a wide range of shades, containing no FD&C dyes, oil, talc, alcohol or fragrance.

Cutting out the 'Botax'

The 10% tanning tax has replaced the 5% tax on cosmetic surgery that was originally included in the bill.

That tax, nicknamed the "Botax," would have included Botox injections and breast implants among other elective surgeries, but was cut out of the bill last year after heavy lobbying from the medical and dermatology industries.

The American Academy of Dermatology, which strongly opposed the Botax, applauded the inclusion of the tanning tax as a replacement because of the significant health risks associated with indoor tanning.

According to the Academy, indoor tanning before the age of 35 is linked to a 75% increase in the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, which has also become more common in young females. Meanwhile, nearly 30 million Americans hit the tanning beds each year and about 2.3 million of these people are teenagers.

Your alternative to Skin Cancer, 10% Tan Tax, and HEALTH!

Kasia Organic Salon’s features TWO options for Natural, Free from Harmful Chemicals Sun Damage and Aging Protection!

Good Day Sunshine Sunscreen, developed by local natural health and beauty care leader Kassie Kuehl, is a chemical-free sunscreen optimal for sensitive or traumatized skin and safe for children.

“Losing my 24 year old brother to skin cancer, I have grown well aware of the many underlying potential causes,” Kuehl said. “Unlike chemical sunscreens, I love that nature can provide remarkable ingredients that reflect and scatter away both UVA and UVB rays from your body by forming a physical barrier, without irritating or clogging your pores.”

Sunless Tanning Lotion   Non-tox of course! 8 oz    *    10% DHA

Kasia Organic Salon offers a Sunless lotion for the Body with moisturizing oils and aloe vera gel was designed for the avid sunless tanner. The added DHA will develop into a rich, golden bronze colour, developting an all-natural alternative to chemical laden sunless tanners.

Getting a tan from a bottle is far safer than sunbathing -- and more natural than it seems. Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, the active ingredient in many sunless tanners, most often is derived from sugar beets or sugarcane. The nontoxic compound reacts with amino acids in the skin's outer layer, causing it to darken. There are also liquid and powdered bronzers, which use minerals to cast a just-for-today tan. Our picks (La Bella Donna Mineral Makeup) include vitamins and plant extracts, so skin ends up healthier than it started.

Our self-tanner is not only safer than sunning, it also nourishes your skin.

Here are some following tips to remember!

1.) Shower and  Exfoliate your skin to slough Off  dead skin. Shave, if necessary. Rinse thoroughly.

2.)  Smooth   Sunless Tanning product evenly over face and/or body, rubbing in slightly. Leave skin in a moist condition. Allow to absorb into the skin. Do not over-rub as this will result in wiping off your tan.

**Recommended:   (MIX 50/50 with Kasia Jojoba Oil to cut down to 5% DHA.)

3.)  Allow the tanning product to absorb 10 - 15 minutes. Colour will intensify overnight.   Moisturize after you shower

DIRECTIONS:

Apply the Sunless  tanner at night just before bed. Thos goes on sheer and will not stain your sheets. Your tan will develop overnight and you will awaken to your newly tanned skin. Wash hands after using. Wait a minimum of 6 hours before showering.  Our commitment to you:

You’ve Been Greenwashed A look beyond “Packaged Innovation”

How to Make the Best Natural and Organic Product Choices

“Green or Eco-friendly packaging, ingredients, soil, and sourcing?  How do we ensure that each of us can make a difference in health and sustainability in our own, personal way?

Did you know that most consumer personal care and lifestyle products have a high number of harmful chemicals and additives that can negatively affect your health, hair, skin, and body? With that in mind, it is so important to put critical thought into the products you are using, especially since any ingredients within your personal care  products can be absorbed into your body to negatively affect your circulatory system.

The first thing to take into consideration is the type of product you are purchasing. Kassie, owner of Minneapolis’ first natural and organic salon, screens all products first for their ingredients and long term safety, followed by their finishing results for the consumer.  As pioneer(s), Kasia Organic Salon is proud to "educate women, build trust, and cut through the greenwashing."

Within the growing buzz of eco-friendly awareness,  there are products that may unfortunately claim to be green when they truly don't live up to expectations. This process is called greenwashing.

What Is Greenwashing?

For a product to be labeled as natural and organic, it is so important that it lives up to strict standards to ensure that all ingredients are safe and usable. It is difficult to differentiate which products may be the best since many seals look similar or are regulated by different agencies. Greenwashing refers to a product that claims to be green or eco-friendly, but unfortunately, may not live up to strict standards in safety. A greenwashed product may use clever advertising to appear natural, though it still may not contain ingredients that are certified as organic.

Examples of a Greenwash:

ý       Clairol is an example of a company that claims to offer a "truly organic experience" with its Herbal Essences line of shampoos but, according to the report, uses chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, and D&C red no. 33, which are not organic. (The report notes that Clairol does use some organic ingredients, does not test on animals, and uses 25 percent post-consumer recycled plastic in its bottles.)

ý       Tyson Chicken promotes its products as "all natural," even though the company treats its chicken with antibiotics.

Be an Educated Consumer!

These days, the savvy consumer must keep in mind that many product lines are playing into the eco-friendly and green market to meet their bottom line motives. To further educate yourself, it is best to look for trustworthy certifications to guarantee that a product is safe and organic to protect the health of your body and the health of your skin!

Taking Steps Toward Improvement

According to the website bsdglobal.com, “Understanding the demographics of green consumerism helps business owners to explore the environmental market. Research has shown that green consumers are sincere in their intentions, with a growing commitment to greener lifestyles; almost always judge their environmental practices as inadequate; do not expect companies to be perfect in order to be considered ‘green’. Rather, they look for companies that are taking substantive steps and have made a commitment to improve.”

What to Look for:

ý    Look for the top two product seals to certify green ingredients: USDA and the Green Seal are the most credible.

ý    Read all ingredient labels carefully to make sure that chemical and preservative ingredients are not included.

ý    Look for products that are cruelty free and not tested on animals.

ý    Look for concentrated cleaning products that contain less water and use less energy to produce.

ý    Avoid all aerosol products, which can be dangerous to users and the environment.

ý    Look for recycled product containers, which may not be the most attractive, but minimize the impact on the environment.

What About the Claim “Au-Naturale”?

Everyone should be familiar with the “all-natural” claim.  Most people assume that “all-natural” or “naturally-pure” means safe, good, or green, but unfortunately, this is not always the case.

"Natural" on a package doesn't necessarily mean a product is good for the Earth.

Buyer Beware, Buyer Confusion.

Chemicals and pesticides come from nature. Aveeno Active Naturals body lotions, for example, contain oatmeal and come in earth-toned bottles printed with plant leaves, but the products are also made with petrolatum, a byproduct of petroleum, which is a finite resource whose processing pollutes the air and water.

Unless a specific definition or explanation is offered, this claim is committing one of Environmental Marketing’s Seven Sins of Greenwashing - the Sin of Vagueness, claims Co. TerraChoice.  In this study launched in 2009, researchers found that 27% of supposedly “green” cleaning products studied in the U.S. were committing the Sin of Vagueness.

Companies and consumers should keep in mind that there is no such thing as a perfectly “green” product: environmentally preferable products are “greener”, not “green.” Environmental progress is important and will happen one step at a time. Individuals have an enormous ability to help demand and shape the marketplace to require greater measures taken in the concers of ingredient safety and transparency.

Now that sounds like a “natural” solution, doesn’t it?

Ammonia Free, The Color of the Future

Every day thousands of women have their hair professionally colored. In fact, 54% of us color our hair regularly!  The hair color industry is ever changing, and ever growing - unfortunately environmental and immunity complications for salon clients are also growing. Much of this is due to the adverse effects of ammonia. Leaving the salon far from “refreshed,” clients end up with headaches, stinging eyes, trouble breathing, or a nasty rash. Conventional hair dyes usually contain ammonia, which is specifically designed to burn and degrade surfaces. Many products labeled as ammonia-free contain a substitute,  which is just as harmful as ethanolamine. However, a new breed of hair color is available - green, fumeless, non-damaging, ammonia-free hair color. We look at why Kasia Organic Salon and other inspiring natural beauty salons are loving ammonia-free color.  As we know, it’s part of the future of beauty!

Kassie at Kasia Organic Salon educates hairstylists, aiming to rectify the lack of knowledge in the hairdressing profession about the color lines they use on a daily basis. “The future is now, and it's high time hair salons start using healthier options for themselves as well”, says Kassie Kuehl.

No Ammo! Why Conventional Color Just Doesn’t “Cover” It

The reasons for choosing an ammonia-free (and ammonia-substitute-free) hair color fall into three categories:

  • Your body's general health
  • The health of your hair
  • The health of your environment

General Body Health

Ammonia-based dark hair dye were linked by the National Cancer Institute in 1994 to a greater incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple myeloma. A study published in 2001 by the International Journal of Cancer found that people who use permanent hair dye are 100% more likely to develop bladder cancer than those who use no permanent dye. 4-ABP is a known human carcinogen, and was recently found in off-the-shelf hair coloring products.

Hair Health

The characteristic flyaway and faded look that you see on heavily peroxided women comes after long-term use of ammonia agents, which leave the hair’s cuticle open and make the hair dry and brittle.  Tyrosine, one of hair's amino acids, is also damaged by ammonia-based products.  When Tyrosine is diminished, this greatly affects the hair's ability to hold onto color.

Ethanolamine is an alternative to ammonia, however when ethanolamine is used in hair color in order to gain 'ammonia-free' status, it needs to be included in concentrations up to 5 times that of ammonia. Ethanolamine is an 'adhesive' type chemical, which can never completely be washed out of your hair and off your scalp. After coloring your hair with ethanolamine-containing products, every time you wash your hair the water acts as a mild oxidizer, inflicting further damage on your hair. Fading and gradually developed dryness after coloring the hair are usually attributable to ethanolamine.

“Then how?”  Kasia Salon’s color line uses an plant-based alkaline agent that slowly swells the cuticle, then controllably closes the cuticle, returning it as closely as possible to its previous state.

Environmental Health

Over 6.2 billion ounces of harmful chemicals from shampoos and conditioners are washed down the drains and out into our water every day.

Leaving the salon retouched … and refreshed!

Educator and salon owner Kassie Kuehl, spurred by her own health reactions due to working with accumulated amounts of  fumes at the salon, built her ammonia-free foundations with Aveda. Now her own business, Kasia Organic Salon, offers fabulous color services so clients can enjoy their experience without inhaling noxious chemicals or experiencing irritated skin and scalp.

Hair Color with a Conscience - Is It for You?

Who should use ammonia-free hair color?

Anyone that is concerned with the volume of chemicals they ingest every day should look into natural, ammonia-free hair color. However, it is even more useful at some particular stages of life! Look up your nearest organic salon if you:

  • Are pregnant - A growing body is well-sensitized to environmental hazards and tiny, unformed human beings are not so lucky. Avoiding chemical exposure is especially important when you are pregnant - but that doesn't mean you have to give up that flexibility with your looks, free of harmful fumes or odors!
  • Are covering grays - If your hair is losing (or has lost) its natural color, you'll be looking to color more often. With ammonia-free color, your hair doesn’t lose the ability to hold color and remains strong and healthy, rather than developing the characteristic frizzy, flyaway look.
  • Cancer and Survivors of Cancer – With the specific approval of their physicians, this is safe for cancer survivors without any harmful side effects and sensitive smells, and leaves the hair soft and sultry again.
  • Young or elderly - Younger and older people are especially sensitive to harsh chemicals. Ammonia-free hair color is particularly recommended for under-18s and over-60s.

A Beautiful Health Lifestyle - Where to Find Ammonia Free Hair Color

Once you know the dangers of ammonia-based hair colors, those 'Ammonia Free!' labels sitting on the shelf right next to all the others look pretty tempting. This can be a better alternative when purchasing an off-the-shelf coloring product, but remember the dangers of ethanolamine.   Check for both ammonia and ethanolamine ingredients in any hair color you buy off the shelf.

What to do with your new, nutrient-rich color now that you have it?

Ask your hairstylist about after-care and everyday maintenance products that let you keep up with the natural snowball you've started rolling!

Harsh ingredients and harsh environments contribute to fading color.  Choosing the proper shampoos, conditioners and UV protective styling products will help prolong the life of your color.  Avoid harsh ingredients  such as sodium lauryl sulfate, and petrochemicals such as propylene glycol and parabens.

The better the health and condition of your locks, the longer your color lasts, the springier your curls and the smoother and glossier your hair will be. Think of it as an investment in your investment. Let your hair feel as good as your conscience!

Natural Beauty is on the move!

There are a number of organic beauty salons growing across the country, where you can discover that your hair can be just as silky and glossy, your skin as vital and fresh, and your cosmetics just as potent and long-lasting, but without the harsh chemicals!

The Look Up, down or plaited, the new romantic looks have a more defined shape, with a grittier, slightly dishevelled feel. “This season one thing that stands out is the idea of ‘urban romance.’ It’s not romantic hair in the usual sense—shapes have an edge, and it’s worn up in a ponytail or a knot. The asymmetrical pattern and haphazard positioning of the braids represents unique individualism and carefree youth.

Sunscreen Chemicals ....Actually Cause Deadly Skin Cancer(s)?

Sunscreen Chemicals May Actually Cause Deadly Skin Cancers Sunscreens are suppose to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. However, the very ingredients that offer sun protection have been found to have adverse health effects. It has been found that, worldwide, the greatest rise in melanoma has been experienced in countries where chemical sunscreens are heavily promoted. Studies of individuals who regularly use sunscreen have shown a higher rate of melanoma in men and a higher rate of basal cell carcinoma in women. Using natural, chemical-free, broad spectrum sunscreens will not only protect you from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, they will not cause adverse health effects like the sunscreens containing harsh chemicals.

In 1978 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the formation of sunscreen standards, but over 30 years later, they still have not finalized them. As a result, sunscreen manufacturers have been allowed to continue selling products that don’t protect adequately, have harmful or untested ingredients, make unsubstantiated claims, and are not required to list all ingredients on their labels. Some also use unapproved sunscreen chemicals in their products and list them as inactive ingredients. UVA radiation penetrates deep into the skin. UVB radiation is stronger and affects the outer layer of the skin causing sunburn.

Both cause premature aging and skin cancer. The FDA considers both UVA and UVB radiation protection equally important, but their proposed regulations would not require that sunscreens protect individuals from UVA radiation. Instead they propose to allow these sunscreens on the market, only requiring the product to bear a “No UVA Protection” warning on the label.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) investigated 868 name brand sunscreens and found serious deficiencies in the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens sold in the United States. Of the 868 sunscreen products tested, the EWG found that:

* 83% provide inadequate protection from the sun or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns.

* 52% bear claims that are unacceptable or misleading.

* 53% contain ingredients that may be unstable.

*They lose effectiveness in filtering out UV radiation or form potentially toxic degradation by-products.

* Many sunscreens fail to provide adequate UVA protection.

Some sunscreens contain ingredients that act as anti-inflammatory agents that artificially boost SPF (sun protection factor) ratings. There are 17 sunscreen chemicals approved for use in the United States, but the majority of them may actually increase the risk of cancers. Chemical sunscreens are free radical generators which increase cellular damage that lead to cancer, have estrogen-like effects, and are synthetic chemicals that are alien to the human body. (Remember, in just 26 seconds after any exposure to chemicals on your skin or in your lungs, traces of these chemicals can be found in every organ of your body.)

Some of these sunscreen chemicals are:

* Benzophenone (oxybenzone) - present in most sunscreens; easily absorbed through the skin; causes irritations and allergies; and is a hormone disrupter. Also used in many other personal care products.

* Padimate-O - found to cause DNA damage which can lead to cancer.

* Avobenzone - easily absorbed through the skin; degrades and becomes ineffective within one hour.

* Diethanolamine (DEA) - may lead to cancer causing compounds if the sunscreen contains nitrites; is often not disclosed on sunscreen labels. Most sunscreens also contain parabens (hormone disrupters) and synthetic fragrances (contain up to 4,000 different chemicals, and can cause allergies and asthma). Extra precaution should be taken when applying sunscreens on children as they are less able to detoxify and excrete chemicals. Also, children’s developing organs are more vulnerable to damage from chemical exposures and more sensitive to low levels of hormonally active compounds.
