A service above
the economy

There are two distinct forces at play when it comes to business at Kasia Organic Salon.

There’s the obvious, of course, that Kassie Kuehl’s three-month-old venture is located at 50th & Bryant, the corner still recovering from a fire that just knocked out five popular businesses. Neighbors are reeling, customer traffic is down significantly and Kuehl said Kasia’s bottom line definitely has been affected.

Kasia Organic Salon
Opened: February 2010
Location: 822 W. 50th St.

Phone: 386-4044

Website:kasiaorganicsalon.com
Number of employees: 4 (but growing)
Optimism level: 5

“In a frugal consumer market, we’ve now lost even the frugal foot traffic,” she said.

Yet Kasia also is at the brink of growth. The customer base is large enough now that Kuehl wants to hire additional help, probably one or two more employees within the coming months. Perhaps more importantly, Kuehl said, she’s getting phone calls from people around the country asking for advice on what her business strives to do, keep chemicals out of the salon industry.

“What we’re doing is going to be the market in five years,” Kuehl said.

In her view, that second factor trumps the first, if not every other economic factor. She’s not trying to be defiant; she just offers a service that’s both rare and needed, she said. Kasia isn’t about providing a luxury.

“We have a different kind of clientele,” Kuehl said. “People are coming to us with no option because they’re having allergic reactions to everything.”

Her optimism comes from several sources, in particular the phone calls from around the country. But she also has seen an up-tick in page views of her salon and natural products’ websites.

“I know the interest is out there,” she said. “I wish [the business] could be bigger for people.”

To get there, she’s keeping her focus on the grassroots level. That means getting neighbors involved and expanding beyond simply giving a haircut to educating the public. Kasia already has hosted a pair of workshops — most recently on the importance of hormone health — while another is on the schedule. Kuehl consults directly with her clients on at-home remedies. A special make-up event is planned for the end of this month.

“We’re just going to continue to pull in the community,” she said. “We’re excited. I think it’s going to be a good summer.”

Top 10 food choices + tips that encourage fat burning and weight loss.

These ten weight loss tips are important tools that according to Ayurvedic principles, help prepare the body for weightloss.

The added benefits of fat burning are huge and go way beyond losing weight!:

Fat is a calm fuel that burns slow and keeps the mood stable.

Fat burning neutralizes the disease-producing acids that are caused by stress.

Fat cells are where we store toxic heavy metals, fat soluble chemicals, pesticides, preservatives and environmental pollutants like estrogenic plastics.  When we burn our fat cells, we continually detox.

TIP 1:  GRAPEFRUIT

Grapefruit is one of nature's fat metabolizers.  They are coming into season right now, so don't miss them.  Remember the old grapefruit diets, where you ate nothing but grapefruits?  That diet had merit but it was too extreme, I suggest eating just 1 or 2 a day. They are great for breakfast as a "fast breaking" food.  Grapefruits support the momentum of burning fat that is established by having an early supper and no snacks through the night. This effect will continue through the morning as the grapefruit forces a metabolism that burns fat, stabilizes energy and balances blood sugar.  Add raw honey for maximum weight loss (see why below).

TIP 2:  RAW HONEY

Honey is another natural fat metabolizer and according to Ayurveda, honey stabilizes blood sugar.  Unlike most sweets that create highs and lows in blood sugar, honey boosts energy and reduces cravings by forcing fat metabolism and detox.  Honey allows us to maintain the basic weight balancing plan of three meals a day without snacking. For this to work however, the honey must be RAW, which means not cooked, not pasteurized and not heated.  Raw honey also scrubs toxins (ama) off the intestinal wall and fat cells.

If honey is heated for any length of time or cooked (such as in muffins, bread or desserts) it will not burn fat or detoxify toxic fat cells. The cooked honey becomes a toxic hardened material.

TIP 3:  WATER

Water is a critical tool for encouraging better fat metabolism.  A study from The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, (volume 92 number 8) showed that drinking 500 ml increased thermogenisis (heat production) by 24 percent.  This increase of metabolic activity before a meal will support more efficient digestion and fat metabolism. In Ayurveda it is recommended to drink 1-2 glasses of water 15-20 minutes before each meal. The water allows the stomach to be hydrated so it is more willing to robustly produce the hydrochloric acid (HCL) needed to digest a big meal.  HCL ensures that what enters the stomach is properly broken down and absorbed in the small intestine.

If the stomach is dry or dehydrated, it won't produce enough HCL for optimal digestion because that much-needed acid would end up burning the stomach lining.  In a future newsletter I will explain why lack of digestive acids is actually the major cause of indigestion and heart burn.

Squeeze a little fresh lemon juice in your water before a meal for an extra weight loss boost (see why below).

TIP 4:  TREAT GLUTEN INTOLERANCE - RATHER THAN AVOIDING GLUTEN

High insulin levels caused by poor diet and eating habits tell the body to store fat.  Low insulin levels are one of the major factors associated with weight loss.  Breads are usually public enemies for losing weight because of the hard to digest gluten content and their impact on insulin levels.  Many get results by avoiding breads and gluten altogether to lose weight.  This strategy treats the symptoms of gluten intolerance, but it is essential to find out why the gluten is not digested in the first place.  I will report on this in detail in a future newsletter.

TIP:  Toasting breads helps lower the impact of gluten on the digestive villi because it makes it easier to digest.

TIP 5:  SALAD DRESSING IMPROVES DIGESTION AND LOWERS INSULIN

Eating vinegar before each meal helps to balance blood sugar and lower insulin levels, which typically spike after a high starch meal according to the September 2005 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The vinegar is a weak ascetic acid that fires up the digestive acids needed to break down a heavy starchy meal. The Italians often start each meal with balsamic vinegar.  If you're not a balsamic vinegar buff, just add more vinegar to your salad.

If vinegar isn't your thing, Ayurveda suggests a few simple recipes to increase HCL production in the stomach:

·         Lemon juice does basically the same thing as vinegar and makes a perfect salad dressing with raw honey.

·         Lemon juice can also be used alone, on food, or in some warm water that you sip with the meal.

·         To really boost digestive strength slice ginger root into dime size slices. Sprinkle the slices with natural salt (Himalayan, Redmond or Celtic salt) and fresh lemon juice.  Eat two before each meal.

TIP 6:  GREEN TEA

Drinking green tea with meals, as the Japanese and Chinese do, helps decrease the absorption of excess fat according to the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.  White, green and black tea regulate the enzyme lipase, which breaks down fat.  These teas have been shown to stimulate fat burning genes and aid in weight loss according to the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism in 2009.  Antioxidants in white, green and black tea also neutralize the toxic chemistry of stress. When caffeine is taken with a meal, such as green tea, the caffeine acts as a digestive stimulant and is beneficial for the efficiency of digestion.  The same caffeine on an empty stomach can be depleting to the adrenals and digestion.

TIP 7:  SPICES

A little spice with each meal can slow the absorption of white sugar and increase the amount of calories burned during each meal according to the July 2006 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Digestion.  Peppers, ginger, Turmeric, cayenne and digestive herbs like Trikatu help stimulate HCL production.

Turmeric: decreases physical pain, inflammation, cholesterol and liver ailments; increases mental clarity, intestinal health and bile flow, and fat metabolism.

TIP 8:  SIP HOT WATER

Sipping hot water every 10-15 minutes all day for two weeks acts as a digestive cleanse and a lymphatic flush. This is one of the best techniques to treat dehydration, which is a major factor in weight gain.  Dehydration triggers a survival response in the body that chemically tells the body to store fat.  Proper hydration supports the bicarbonate level just inside the stomach lining that protects it from being burned by digestive acids.  If the body is dehydrated, this water-based bicarbonate layer will dry out and the tummy will ache.  If it isn't treated soon, the stomach will soon be told to make less digestive hydrochloric acid (HCL), which means that food is no longer being properly digested.

My favorite test for dehydration:

·         Sip hot water every 10-15 minutes for just one day. If you are not craving and thirsting for more hot water by the end of the day, you are probably not dehydrated.

·         If you are dehydrated, you will crave more because the hot water will hydrate, dilate and stimulate micro-circulation and lymphatic drainage.  This will rehydrate the tissues as the body absorbs the water and you will get thirsty for more.

·         If you are thirsty for more hot water after one day - continue for 2 weeks to totally rehydrate.

·         Add a squeeze of lemon to spike the hot water every once in a while.  The lemon acts like soap to scrub the tissue and the hot water becomes the cleansing rinse.

TIP 9:  IMPROVE ELIMINATION

One of the most common reasons for weight gain is sluggish elimination. Assist with Probiotics, which helps as an intestinal cleanser and toner that flushes toxins and excess mucus off the wall of the gut.  This helps re-assimilate nutrients properly.

I also recommend that you increase fiber in your diet by eating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

TIP 10:  BEETS

Try to eat one fresh beet a day for the next 3 months to help thin the bile and flush the liver and gallbladder. Beets are best grated raw with lemon juice but also have benefits when eaten cooked. When the bile flows the digestive system can break down fat and neutralize digestive acids and the liver can remove toxic fat soluble chemicals.  Optimal bile flow may be the most important piece of the digestive puzzle when it comes to weight loss - so eat your beets!

Could Your Hair Color Give You Liver Disease?

A recent study out of England has linked hair dye with progressive liver disease. Published in the international gastroenterology journal, aptly called Gut, British researchers revealed the findings of over 5,000 people who were surveyed about their risks for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) -- an early form of liver cirrhosis and long-term progressive autoimmune disease. PBC is thought to be caused, at least in part, by certain environmental factors such as chemicals found in hair dye.

Of those surveyed, women who color their hair were 37% more likely to develop PBC than women who don't.

Respondents were not asked how often they dyed their hair, so it's not clear how much of a role this played in the liver disease, but the report states past research has shown a correlation between PBC and chemicals found in cosmetics, particularly octynoic acid, which is found in hair dye and nail polish.

Other factors, such as genetics, pre-existing autoimmune diseases, smoking and certain skin conditions were also found to increase the risk for PBC.

This is not the first time that our quest for beauty has been linked to possible harmful effects.

Did you know the average woman uses up to 20 different beauty products a day and ingests seven pounds of lipstick over her lifetime? Or how about the fact that a woman who uses makeup every day absorbs five pounds of chemicals into her body each year?

While many of the chemical ingredients in these items have not yet been tested and FDA approved, meaning the risks are still unknown, some have been linked to conditions ranging from minor skin irritations to cancer.

Yerba Mate Digestion and detoxification….infused Kasia Tea.

"It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value." Yerba Mate is a sought after source of difficult to find important nutrients: Vitamins B-1, B-2, A, riboflavin, carotene, colin, pantothenic acid, inositol and 15 types of amino acids (F. Alikaridis 1987). It also contains significant quantities of the all important iron, potassium, and magnesium minerals, something Green Tea lacks. As noted by The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society, "It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value."

More about Yerba Mate

Just about everyone has felt the jittery side effects of stimulants at one time or another. Yerba mate, in contrast, appears to give your brain a boost without making you nervous. You feel alert and sharp. Interestingly, it actually works as a tonic for the central nervous system, calming the body and the mind. It has also been shown to improve mood and concentration, reduce anxiety, and prevent mental fatigue.

How it works

There are 196 chemicals in yerba mate that are active in the body including B vitamins; Vitamins A, C, and E; and the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and selenium. And mate has 11 polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. Plus, it's high in chlorophyll, which gives it its rich green color and may offer additional antioxidant benefits.

But the most important chemical in mate is one by the name of "mateine." Mateine is a xanthine alkaloid. You might have heard of other xanthines, such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine. Mateine appears to possess the best combination of xanthine properties. Like other xanthines, it stimulates the central nervous system, but unlike others, it doesn't appear to be addicting. Unlike caffeine, it isn't a strong diuretic, so it's much less likely to dehydrate the body.

Mistakenly, many people think of all xanthines in herbal supplements as caffeine. But whether you call it mateine or mistake it for caffeine, a cup of mate will likely give you quite a lift. For a quick comparison, 50 grams of yerba mate (a typical cup of the tea) with a typical mateine content of 1 to 1.5% by weight contains the equivalent of 500 to 750 mg of caffeine. But a typical cup of coffee contains only 80 to 175 mg of caffeine, and a cup of tea has about half that amount. Thus, we're looking at over twice the "active" ingredient. You might achieve lift off with mate, without the side effects associated with other popular stimulants.

Increased energy and fat burning

The result of the chemical combination in mate may, obviously, be a BIG increase in energy and fat burning. One of the most remarkable abilities of mate appears to be that it gives users energy without the muscle tension associated with caffeine. In fact, all xanthines, with the exception of caffeine, cause smooth muscle relaxation.

Mate may help support long-term energy by maintaining energy production with oxygen for longer periods of time, which burns more calories, improves heart efficiency, and delays buildup of endurance, robbing waste products, such as lactic acid that are created by anaerobic glycolysis (energy production without oxygen). One indicator that it is working to burn more fat is a drop in something called the respiratory quotient (RQ), which indicates a rise in the proportion of fat being oxidized or burned in the body. Science is revealing that it also helps stabilize blood sugar to potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Other powerful benefits

Improved sleep: Incredibly, mate does not interfere with sleep. In fact, it improves sleep and increases rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as well as the time spent in deep sleep (delta sleep). Many people report that they require less sleep when using mate because they sleep deeper.

Digestive function and detoxification: Mate has been shown to improve digestion and repair damaged gastrointestinal tissues. It may control constipation by softening stools and stimulating intestinal contractions. Mate also may help detoxify the body by increasing water loss thru urination, digestive movements, and evacuation.

Safe for the heart: While other stimulants, like caffeine and ephedra, are feared to potentially have harmful effects on the heart, mate has been shown to actually be good for the heart. It may increase the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart during stress or exercise and may lower blood pressure and improve circulation in some people by relaxing blood vessels.

Immune support: Mate appears to boost immunity both by fighting infectious organisms and supporting immune cells, particularly white blood cells, in the body. Vitamins C and E, found in mate, are important for immune support. Unlike other herbs that may continuously stimulate the immune system, mate acts to balance immunity as a tonic. Saponins are also important chemicals in mate, which may be partially responsible for its immune-supporting effects.

Improve lung function Yerba mate also helps relieve allergies by stimulating the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids, which suppress inflammation and overactive immune responses. It also opens the respiratory passages. This is good news for athletes since these benefits aid optimal breathing and get more oxygen into the body. Mate's potential to relax muscles may make it useful for asthma since it appears to dilate the bronchi (gas absorbers in your lungs).

Female Hair Loss: Top Real Cause(s)

Kasia Organic Salon and  Female Hair Loss

Over the years with many clients, I see the numbers continuing to grow and  increase in the number of women suffering from hair loss, particularly between the ages of twenty-five to forty.

What is true....is that the most common causes of hair loss in women are hormonally related.  We all have to address this at some point - as they occur during and following childbirth, with the use of the contraceptive pill, anemia and menopause.

Treating and diagnosing Female hair loss is not as simple and straight-forward as male pattern baldness.  The good news is that a large percent of women’s hair loss is completely reversible.

At Kasia we help you get to the "ROOT" of this in a multi-facited manner.  The key is to find out what the reason is, and to then evaluate your options in addressing  it.  First and for-most, we help evaluate your current products and routines.  We suggest a variety of at home treatments with essential oils, supplements, and non invasive.

Through getting to know you, our treatments involve a team of responsible informed natural practioners to help run hormone panels or other  series of tests to ensure we as a collective uncover and correct the problem instead of just treating the symptoms.

The Ludwig Scale - for Women's Hair Loss.

Women have a pattern of hair loss called Female Pattern Loss. This loss does not occur in the same pattern as men but appears as a diffuse thinning throughout the scalp. There is a chart designed to classify Female Pattern loss called the Ludwig Scale. There are however always exceptions and in some cases men may suffer from a diffuse type thinning and women may experience a similar hair loss pattern to men.

Usually called Female Androgenetic hair loss is caused by both parents carrying the dominant gene for hair loss and both passing it on to their daughter. If only one of your parents passes this on, hair loss is not caused as it would be in men. This is due to the higher levels of Estrogenic or female hormones in women.

Female balding occurs usually more slowly than in men, with the hair on the top and front of the scalp gradually becoming finer and weaker, the shaft diameter is reduced. In more advanced or severe cases, the crown area is also affected as is the hair growing above the ears. The levels of the male hormone testosterone are raised and this may cause various other symptoms including oily skin, acne Hirsuitism (excessive hair growth on the face and body in a masculine pattern). Menstrual disturbances and lowered fertility may also accompany this problem. Normally, due to the higher levels of female hormones Estrogens, the growth cycle of hair is slower in women than in men. This means that generally each hair grows for a longer period of time before being replaced. Women therefore are usually able to grow their hair longer than men unless the level of androgens interferes with this process. Female hormone levels are usually highest between the age of puberty and about twenty-five. After this they decrease slightly, speeding up the growth cycle giving a slightly higher percentage of resting or catagen hairs. In other words the hair never appears to grow quite so quickly as it did during the teens and early twenties. This has nothing to do with hair loss and is just a natural change in the cycle. It is known that chronic or acute stress has the effect of lowering the production of estrogens and while testosterone levels may not increase, as it is a powerful hormone it may become more active affecting genetically targeted hair follicles which would have been protected by higher estrogenic hormone levels. Various theories have been put forward as to why the incidence of hair loss should be increasing in women. The most likely reason is that as in male hair loss, stress is a major factor. We do live in an increasingly stressful world and for women in particular this has its adverse effects. The female role has changed much over the past two decades and now women have taken their rightful place in industry, commerce and the professions, bringing with it the increased levels of stress that comes with management, responsibility and the decision making processes. The incidence of heart disease, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, etc. which used to be the prerogative of the male executive are now increasing rapidly in women, particularly those with high pressure jobs. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome The disorder sometimes referred to as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome causes the ovaries, which usually produce estrogens, to malfunction causing the metabolism of testosterone to take place. Symptoms are hair loss from the scalp and may also include stopping of periods, weight gain, infertility, oily skin, acne and hair growth on the face and body (hirsuitism). Hormone therapy and minor surgery are usually successful in solving all the problems that may occur. Adrenal Tumor A tumor of the adrenal gland which normally produces adrenaline, a stimulant hormone, as its man secretion can cause conversion of hormones produced and a disturbance in their biosynthesis or chemical production to form testosterone which will cause similar effects as for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It must be realized then that if your hair loss problem is severe, that careful medical diagnosis is essential to find the cause or site of the excessive production of testosterone before treatment is given. Fortunately in most cases the results are very good but may take time to achieve. Hair Loss Following Pregnancy During early pregnancy estrogenic hormone levels increase. This slows down the normal cycle of hair growth, resulting in only about five per cent of the normal hair fall and replacement to occur. Hairs that would normally stop growing, continue to grow beyond their normal life cycle. This causes the hair in many cases to appear to grow thicker as more hairs are in active growth than usual. The hair on the eyebrows and eyelashes may also thicken.

Assuming the expectant mother to be healthy, this continues until the baby is born. Following the birth of the baby, hormone levels change very rapidly often causing the so-called ‘three day blues’ or depression. At this time those hairs, which were growing beyond their normal lifespan, revert to telogen hairs, which begin to fall at any time after one month, but usually when the baby is about three months old. Occasionally this may take place very rapidly so that hair may fall out by the handful and can be very distressing, particularly to a tired mother. More usually the hair falls over a period of a month or two and the hair loss gradually decreases. In some cases, particularly when breastfeeding, the milk producing hormone prolactin will delay the hair loss. The important thing to know and remember is that as fast as the old hairs are being shed, new anogen hairs are growing so that at scalp level the number of hairs rarely decreases. There will, however, be a large number of short new hairs growing and less long hair. Under normal circumstances the hair is all growing back by the time the baby is a year old. Patience and treatment is the normal answer. Only about one in a thousand women find that their hair does not grow back after childbirth and this is usually due to general health problems, stress, poor circulation or anemia (lack of iron). All problems that are usually easy to correct. Again treatment is highly successful.

Miscarriage or Abortion These may cause slight hair changes as described for childbirth and hair loss is more noticeable if they occur following the first three months of pregnancy. Immediate regular treatment will help to stop hair loss and speed complete recovery of hair growth. The Contraceptive Pill It is rare for contraceptive pills to cause any problem with hair growth, they may however give rise to an increase in oiliness in some women. Occasionally the pill prescribed may not suit the hormonal balance of some women but the symptoms are usually discomfort, water retention, headaches, etc. Not hair loss. Sometimes a different combination of hormones will be more acceptable. When commencing to take the pill, hair may fall at a slightly increased rate for the first three months or it may grow thicker depending upon the individual reaction.

Ceasing to take the pill frequently gives rise to the same reaction as that occurring after normal childbirth, although usually in a mild form. Hair shedding will increase slightly about three months after cessation as a new growth cycle of hair begins. Regular treatment will help to establish new growth cycle more rapidly. Anemia Low blood pressure, poor circulation, lack of iron and low ferritin levels to produce hemoglobin which is the oxygen carrying component of blood may often lead to diffuse thinning of hair from all parts of the scalp. The hair may become lighter and some of the hairs finer in texture. The hair often becomes more brittle and broken hairs may be seen all through the hair at different lengths. A blood test followed by iron supplements in the diet will normally solve the problem within a couple of months. If the scalp circulation is very poor or the scalp muscles too tense, regular manipulative and vibratory massage of the scalp will aid re-growth of hair. Low dosage iron supplements frequently improve density of hair growth even where iron deficiency anemia has not been diagnosed. Hair Changes at the Menopause The hair may gradually become slightly thinner and finer with advancing age. General health, fitness and diet are obviously important factors as well as maintaining a good scalp circulation. Occasionally if genetically at risk or hair has had a previous tendency to thin, the loss of hair may become visible and noticeable.

Bioidentical Hormones are  becoming more popular for a variety of reasons including prevention of Osteoporosis (brittle bones due to calcium loss), memory retention, improved skin elasticity and continued interest in sex.

Hair loss can be one of the most frustrating and difficult  for men and women to deal with.

Myths abound when it comes to hair. Here are some Truths:

  1. Cutting or shaving the hair will have no effect on its rate of growth.
  2. Shampooing the hair will not affect hair loss one way or the other. The hairs that fall out during shampooing are ready to come out anyway.
  3. Daily or twice daily shampooing is quite acceptable as long as the shampoo is formulated for daily use. People with oily scalps should shampoo at least once a day.
  4. Frequency of shampooing will not effect the rate of production of sebum (oil) from the sebaceous glands.
  5. Sebum does not cause hair loss. Hair follicles do not get blocked up by oil
  6. Genetic hair loss in men is inherited from either parent.
  7. It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs from the head each day
  8. Each hair on the head grows for about 3-5 years before being shed
  9. 40 million men and 20 million women suffer from hair loss
  10. Scalp hair grows at a rate of about 1 cm (just under 1/2 an inch) a month
  11. We each have about 100,000 hairs on the scalp

Toxic Cleaning Cabinet? Our Recommended Hard-working Essential Oils for Home!

The Kasia Way -  Our Recommended Hard-working Essential Oils for Home!

Here’s the bare minimum to stock up on when it comes to cleaning...

* Lemon essential oil

* Tea Tree essential oil

* White Pine essential oil (or your favorite piney oil!)

* Lavender essential oil

* Peppermint essential oil

"So...What's in your Cleaning Cabinet?"

AIR FRESHENERS: Work by coating your nasal passages with an oil film and/or reduce your ability to smell odors. Often containing Formaldehyde, a highly toxic ingredient, which can irritate eyes, nose, throat, and skin. High exposure can cause nausea, headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness, memory loss and shortness of breath. They may also include Phenol, a skin irritant that can cause swelling, burning, and peeling. High doses of Phenol can also cause cold sweats, convulsions, circulatory collapse, coma, and even death. Most Air Fresheners contain artificial fragrances, which are petroleum based.

ALL-PURPOSE CLEANERS: often contains Propylene Glycol, a chemical that can cause nausea, convulsions, slurred speech, disorientation, and heart and kidney problems if ingested.  Ninety percent contain Sodium Laurel (Laureth) Sulfate. Some all-purpose cleaners may contain Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), also found in drain cleaners, stain removers, and bathroom cleaners. A highly reactive chemical, lye can react violently with water and other materials, sometimes generating enough heat to ignite nearby combustible materials. Extremely corrosive to all tissues, especially the eyes as it can cause blindness. Aerosol sprays containing this chemical can also lead to lung injury. Extremely dangerous when coming in contact with skin, mucous membranes, mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach tissues.

AMMONIA: a volatile chemical, commonly found in window cleaners, and some stain removers and detergents. Ammonia can damage your eyes, as well as respiratory tract and cause ski irritation. Ammonia adds nitrogen to the environment, which can damage some ecosystems.

ANTIBACTERIAL CLEANERS: contains Sodium Laurel (Laureth) Sulfate and Triclosan, a chemical that, if absorbed through the skin, may contribute to liver damage. Eliminates *good* bacteria, and studies suggest bacteria acquires resistance to antimicrobial agents.

CARPET AND UPHOLSTERY SHAMPOO: Highly toxic ingredients include Perchlorethylene, a carcinogen that can damage the liver, kidneys, and nervous system. They also contain Ammonium Hydroxide, which is extremely irritable to eyes, skin and respiratory passages.

CHLORINE BLEACH: a strong corrosive with fumes that can irritate or burn the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. If ingested, bleach can cause pulmonary edema or vomiting. Extremely dangerous when mixed with ammonia, as the resulting fumes can be deadly.

DISHWASHER DETERGENTS: often contain highly concentrated amounts of chlorine, a leading cause of child poisonings (see Chlorine Bleach). They also contain Sodium Laurel (Laureth) Suflate and phosphates that can cause severe skin irritation, burns and chronic poisoning if inhaled or ingested.

DRAIN CLEANER: often contains Sodium Hydroxide (Lye, see All Purpose Cleaner above), Hydrochloric Acid or Trichloroethane. Hydrochloric Acid is a corrosive element that can irritate skin, and damage kidneys, liver and digestive tracts. Trichloroethane is an eye and skin irritant that can depress the nervous system and damage liver and kidneys.

FURNITURE POLISH: many include Petroleum Distillates, a highly flammable skin irritant, and Phenol (see Air Fresheners). Some also include Nitrobenzene, a toxic material easily absorbed through the skin, or Methyl Chloroform, which can cause skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, headache, drowsiness, symptoms of drunkenness, kidney damage, liver damage, convulsions, and even coma. A variety of other petroleum-based solvents may be used that can cause mucous membrane irritation, as well as headache, dizziness, and nausea at higher concentrations.

LAUNDRY ROOM PRODUCTS: contains Sodium Laurel (Laureth) Sulfate, and  Sodium or Calcium Hypochlorite, highly corrosive materials that can irritate or burn skin, eyes or respiratory tract. Other chemicals include Linear Alkylate Sulfonate, which can be absorbed through the skin and may cause liver damage, and Sodium Tripolyphosphate, a skin and mucous membrane irritant that can cause vomiting. Liquid detergents may also contain Ethyl Alcohol, which can cause coughing, drowsiness, fatigue, and headaches.

MOLD AND MILDEW CLEANERS: ingredients often include Sodium Hypochlorite, a corrosive material that can irritate or burn skin and eyes. In cases of high exposure, can cause pulmonary edema, which can lead to coma or death. Many such cleaners also contain Formaldehyde (see Air Fresheners).

OVEN CLEANER: contains Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), a strong irritant to skin and eyes; can also inhibit reflexes (see All-Purpose Cleaner).

STAIN REMOVERS: often contain Petroleum Naphtha, a petroleum distillate that can inflame and damage lungs.

TOILET BOWL CLEANERS: may contain Hydrochloric Acid, a highly corrosive irritant to both skin and eyes that can also lead to kidney and liver damage. May also include Hypochlorite Bleach, another corrosive irritant that can burn eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Ingestion can lead to pulmonary edema, vomiting or coma. If combined with other chemicals may result in potentially fatal chlorine fumes. Other products can include Phosphoric Acid, an extremely corrosive material that can cause severe irritation and burns to skin.
