Finding the Right Hair Color after Chemotherapy

colorprotection1

Beauty Ecology Organic Salon is a leading expert in safe, consumer hair color. This salon offers a alternatives with a company called “Mastey.”   Here is how Kassandra (owner) explains:

The Mastey zero-ammonia hair color is ideal for cancer patients who have been treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation. The gentleness of the product fits well into the gentle hair care routine recommended by oncology care providers.

For clients who are on medications, we will first perform a clarifying and chelating treatment if the patient/client decides to color her hair. This step is important because many chemotherapy drugs contain metals, which will react with the oxidation dyes and cause hair breakage. This treatment, while not 100% effective, will reduce the problem.

The end use color formula does not cause any scalp irritation - even on clients who developed a very sensitive scalp from cancer treatments. Also, it does not contain the compound PPD and resorcinol, which are allergens and suspected carcinogens. However, as with using any new color formulation, the Kasia team suggests doing a patch test 48-hour before the coloring service to ensure their safety.

Due to its gentleness to the scalp and the hair, the Mastey color does not temporarily prohibit the hair growth as in ammonia-based hair colors do to many clients. The 100+ color shade/palette options will give the client a lot of flexibility for customization. Also, it covers gray effortlessly and it can lift up to 4 levels without using a bleach lightener.

While the Mastey color is not a vegetable dye, it is a wonderful product that addresses health concerns but at the same time delivers superior results. Based on the performance expectations of our stylists and clients, we cannot recommend any vegetable dyes now until they are significantly improved. The 2 vegetable dyes that are available in retail stores are based on henna and indigo. They have some success in reducing the typical red hue and extending the palette range by adding other plant coloring. However, they are not products that most people want to use.

These products coat the hair with a residue layer that makes the hair look dull and feel rough. Plus, henna’s do not cover gray well. They are “deposit only” dyes and have no ability to lift. The results are largely unpredictable from person to person and from one application to the next. The products are sticky and they stain the scalp badly. Many users reported that they rinse for more than 30 minutes and during the process lost a lot of hair and sensitized the scalp. Worse yet, the henna colors fade off tone after just 2-3 shampoos. Color formulas with no ammonia, no PPD’s and no resorcinol, are the safest color lines and have excellent results for patient’s/client’s.
