Hair and essential oils? Here's a quick guide!

Essential oils are gentle and natural and do not strip your skin or hair of it's natural protection. The condition of your hair is affected when you are under stress, tense or not eating properly. Essential oils are able to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft and follicle and aid the growth of healthy, shining hair. And there are even essential oils that encourage new hair growth as seen below.  One can add them to their shampoo, or do a scalp massage at night combined with Jojoba Oil.

The vicious cycle of Silica + SLS and your hair!

Are you experiencing dry hair?  Limp with excess frizz?Do your hair products contain Silica or sodium laurel sulphate (SLS)  ?

Does this sound familiar?  The cycle of hair washing goes like this........

  • we shampoo our hair because it is dirty
  • the SLS in the shampoo strips the hair and scalp of natural oils so both are dry and hair is flyaway or frizzy
  • we use conditioner with silica to reduce the frizziness created by the SLS
  • the silica builds up on our hair leaving it feeling a bit flat and dull looking
  • and start all over again, never getting the results we want so change products always looking for something that will give us healthy, shiny hair

Well this is the  story of many of our new clients anyway!  When you invest in a good natural or organic shampoo & conditioner for at least a month, it can take time to really see results when moving away from SLS and silica. Regardless, do yourself a favor and ditch the sodium laurel sulphate.

Is your hair DRY?

The most common cause of dry hair is nutritional deficiency, but may also be attributed by heat, an open cuticle, chemicals, and poor maintenance. Cheaper hair products that are harsh on hair also contribute to this condition, as they may strip away essential oils and nutrients required for overall scalp and hair health. Most chemicals in perms and relaxers may damage the hair follicle and overall look, as the hair becomes dry and brittle.

How To Detect

Dry hair lacks the oil and moisture it required to give it a shiny and soft texture. As a result, hair that is dry is brittle and dull and has a straw-like texture. Most people will experience dry hair at one point or another, either due to over-processing or exposing it to wind, sun and chlorinated swimming pools. All of these are considered external causes of this hair condition.

Chronic dry hair that comes from an internal source may be a sign of an underlying health problem. When conditioning treatments do not moisturize your hair, it may be time to seek medical advice as it can be an early sign of a more serious internal condition.

External Factors

  • Excessive washing and blow-drying, harsh detergents
  • Environmental dryness

Internal Sources

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Malnutrition
  • Hypoparathyroidism
