Your deodorant could be doing a lot more than just covering up 'BO'

Chemicals in both men's and women's antiperspirants and deodorants could be doing a lot more than just covering up BO.

All the potential risks associated with chemicals in cosmetics make natural deodorants a lot more appealing.....

The next time you reach for that stick of roll-on deodorant, consider this: A recent study in the Journal of Applied Toxicology found that chemicals commonly used in deodorants were showing up in breast-cancer tumors, leading the authors to suspect that they may play some role in the development of the disease. Those same chemicals have been linked to sperm damage in men, and because of evidence that they can be absorbed through your skin, there's more reason than ever to ditch the plastic tube.

The chemicals in question are the preservatives parabens, which are added to personal care products and some processed foods to prevent bacterial growth. Though they aren't as well researched as chemicals like BPA, "parabens are estrogenic," says Lynn Carroll, PhD, senior scientist at The Endocrine Disruption Exchange, a nonprofit that researches hormone-mimicking chemicals. And they build up in breast milk. "That is concerning because whoever's eating the breast milk gets a dose, and those children are at a very vulnerable stage in their development."

Too much estrogen in your system can be responsible not just for breast cancer, but for other dangerous conditions such as malignant melanoma (ironic, considering that parabens are commonly used in sunscreens) and male reproductive disorders. A November 2010 study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that parabens can damage sperm in mice.

In this most recent study, researchers from the University of Reading, in the UK, collected 160 samples of breast tissue taken from women who'd had mastectomies and tested them for the presence of five different parabens. At least one form of paraben was present in 99 percent of the tissue samples, and all five were present in 60 percent of the samples. What was concerning, the authors added, was that one paraben, propylparaben, existed in much higher levels in the axilla region of the breast, the area closest to the armpit, which is the area where, according to the authors, a high percentage of tumors are found.

Thermography Testing for Early Detection & Women's Health

Our goal is to inform, educate, beautify, and empower our guests "Beautiful Health."

Radiation Free Breast and Body Screening

 What is Thermography?

Thermography truly is a life saving technology that has been repeatedly validated by independent studies around the world.   Kasia Organics has now partnered with professionals and now offers a non invasive form of  whole body, half body, and breast testing.  What is Thermography?

Thermography is an under-used functional screening test that measures heat radiating from the body. Because this imaging technique requires no direct contact with the breast, it is never painful and there is no risk of rupturing breast implants.

CAUTION:   X-Ray, C.T., Ultrasound and M.R.I are all tests of  'anatomy' that measure the structures of your body whereas thermography is unique in its capability to show the physiological change and metabolic processes that occur in the body.

TIME: 6:30-8:00pm

Date:  June 19th    1-8pm Women's Health & Early Detection Screening

Appointments can be made NOW

Space is limited so RSVP to Kasia Salon (612 824 7611) today!

Although many people associate thermography as a breast screening, images can be taken of the entire body or just regions of interest.

It is used as an aid for diagnosis and prognosis, as well as monitoring therapy progress, for conditions and injuries, including:

Back Injuries Breast Disease
Arthritis Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Headache Disc Disease
Nerve Damage Inflammatory Pain
Unexplained Pain Skin Cancer
Fibromyalgia Referred Pain Syndrome
RSD (CRPS) Sprain/Strain
Dental and TMJ Stroke Screening
Artery Inflammation Whiplash
Vascular Disease Digestive Disorders

Additionally, thermograms provide:

  • Reliable and accurate information for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis...
  • Precise and objective data from accurate measurements of thermal information...
  • Considerable financial savings over conventional investigations...

And unlike most diagnostic tests, thermal imaging is:

  • Not painful...
  • Non-invasive...
  • Quick – your multi-image exams usually take less than 15 minutes...

Additionally:

  • Makes no contact with your body -- with no body part compression (such as what you experience with mammograms)
  • Emits absolutely NO radiation

There are a number of areas to scan, but it specializes in:

  • Breast Imaging
  • Pain Diagnostics
  • Early-Stage Disease Detection

Whether your pain is acute or chronic, thermography can help provide answers to your pain issue.

  • Remains the only method available for visualizing your pain and pathology...
  • Can assess pain and pathology anywhere in your body....
  • Is a very useful adjunctive procedure to other diagnostic tools, such as x-ray, bone scans, and ultrasound...
  • Is very cost effective, risk free, and provides you with instant images...
  • Fills in the gap in clinical diagnosis...

Examples of Thermography screening:

  • Arthritis: Thermography can help you detect early signs of arthritis -- and differentiate between osteoarthritis and more severe forms like rheumatoid. Effective early treatment strategies can then be implemented, before you experience further degeneration.
  • Neck and Back Pain: Thermal pain patterns ‘light up' white and red hot on a scan in the involved area. You can get relief faster and begin restorative care that more precisely targets the correct area.
  • Dental Issues: If you have TMJ, gum disease, or an infected tooth, this will show up on a thermal scan as white or red hot.
  • Sinus Issues & Headaches: Significant heat in your forehead or sinus region revealed on a thermal scan is an indicator that these systems in your body are not functioning properly.
  • Immune Dysfunction, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue: The immune system correlates to the T1 andT2 areas of your spine -- high levels of heat in that region can indicate immune dysfunction. On the other hand, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and aching joints are just a few complaints that correlate to cool patterns seen at this area.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): This condition is often misdiagnosed. For instance, you may think you have CTS, yet the scan shows your neck is referring pain from a different affected area. This will help you get the most appropriate treatment.
  • Digestive Disorders: Irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis and Crohn's disease are often visible with thermography. If you're able to address these conditions early on, you'll find that health restoration is much more likely.
  • Other Conditions: Including bursitis, herniated discs, ligament or muscle tear, lupus, nerve problems, whiplash, stroke screening, cancer, and many, many others.

Is thermography safe? Absolutely.  The imaging measures heat from the body and, unlike mammography, does not use radiation. In fact, mammography may pose significant and cumulative risks of breast cancer in premenopausal women. The routine practice of taking four films of each breast annually results in radiation exposure that is approximately 1000 times greater than doses from a chest x-ray.

Important Research has shown thermography to be 97% sensitive in finding abnormalities in breast tissue, including the earliest stages of breast cancer. In contrast, mammography is reported to miss 50% of tumors in dense breast tissue, 30% of tumors in fibrocystic breasts, and 10-15% of tumors in fatty (normal) breasts. As physicians, we often read these disclaimers on our patients' mammography reports.

Non invasive • No radiation • Painless • No contact with the body • F.D.A approved

Costs:  The cost for the entire procedure, reports, mailing of the color copy, medical radiological interpretation, and transportation of equipment.  Payment is made directly to the thermographer at the time of the appointment.

 Time for Booking:

Breast Screening     30 minutes 1/2 Body                        45 minutes Full Body                      1 hour

Preparation for DITI (Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging) Breast Screening

•   Lotions or powder should not be used on or around the breast or armpits before the test. No smoking, vigorous exercise, sauna, niacin (vitamin B-3), or spicy foods are allowed for at least 3 hours prior to the test, because of their effect on the circulation.

•   To perform the test, all upper body clothing and jewelry must be removed (in a full privacy room), and a surgical gown will be supplied.

•   The thermographer must be informed of any recent skin lesions on the breast, which may cause false positive results because of inflammation.

The entire appointment lasts 30 minutes. Within 7-10 days, one color copy of the images together with the medical radiological interpretation (performed by a board-certified M.D.) will be received at the referring health care practitioner's office, or at the patient's address (if self-referred or if so desired).

The results will either assist in diagnosis (especially in conjunction with other diagnostic or suspicious findings) or in establishing of a baseline pattern to which all future thermograms will be compared. Any changes indicating departure from this baseline will warrant further investigation or treatment.

How do I get started? Please contact us at 612 824 7611 for days/times we are scheduled to screen.

After completing the imaging, a follow up to review your results is advised with your medical doctor, or from our referral list.

Thermography - The Newest Line of Defense in Early Cancer Detection

More women are diagnosed with breast cancer in America than any other cancer. Fortunately, treatment has come a long way, indicated by the 89% of women who had a five- year survival rate from 1999-2006 (National Cancer Institute). But early detection still plays a vital role in optimizing a breast cancer patient’s chances for full recovery. Women today understand the importance of annual mammograms and monthly self examinations, but many women have not tried or even heard of another early detection exam available to them: breast thermography.

Breast thermography, also known as Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is a simple, safe non-invasive test of the breast. Thermography can provide early detection of breast conditions beyond what is possible through monthly self-exam, doctor exam or mammogram. Thermography works by taking infrared images of the breast that detect minute temperature changes associated with breast inflammation and tumors. Having this information allows for the earliest possible intervention and treatment. It involves no radiation, discomfort or pain, and the entire thermography scan takes about 15 minutes.

What is the difference between a thermogram and mammogram?

Breast thermography plays a role in early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology, including breast cancer, and is considered a screening device. Mammograms, on the other hand, are used to precisely locate an abnormal area and are considered a diagnostic tool. Breast thermography does not replace mammography. Rather, the two are considered complementary to each other.

Who can benefit from thermography?

All women can benefit from breast screening with thermography. It is especially appropriate for younger women (age 30-50) whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammograms to be effective. Thermography is also an ideal choice for women of any age who, for any number of reasons, are unable to undergo routine mammography. Thermography can provide a clinical marker to the doctor or mammographer, pinpointing a specific area of the breast that needs particularly close examination.

There are no conditions that make thermography inadvisable and it can be safely and effectively utilized by women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have implants. It should be noted, however, that breasts are more highly vascularized, meaning they have more blood vessels during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Such vascularization can make baseline screening through thermography more difficult. Typically, thermography will only be used on a pregnant or breastfeeding woman suffering from a specific complaint such as a lump, discomfort or infection. Baseline routine screening should ideally be done 3 months after a woman has stopped breastfeeding.

What are the early breast cancer detection guidelines?

There is no single method for the early detection of breast cancer. Using a combination of methods will increase your chances of detecting cancer in an early stage. These methods include :

  • Mammography for all women who are aged 40 or older.
  • Regular breast thermography (DITI) screening for adult women of all ages.
  • A regular breast examination by a health professional.
  • Monthly breast self-examination.
  • Personal awareness of changes in the breasts.
  • Readiness to promptly discuss any such changes with a doctor.

These guidelines should be considered along with your background and medical history.

Can thermography detect breast cancer?

It takes years for a tumor to grow, thus the earliest possible indication of abnormality will allow for the earliest possible treatment and intervention. Thermography can play an important role in monitoring breast health and assisting in early detection.

Breast cancer tends to grow significantly faster in younger women:

AGE AVERAGE TUMOR DOUBLING TIME

  • Under 50 years old 80 days
  • 50 – 70 years old 157 days
  • Over 70 years old 188 days

Source: Cancer 71:3547-3551, 1993

The faster a malignant tumor grows, the more infrared radiation it generates. For younger women in particular, results from thermography screening can lead to earlier detection and, ultimately, longer life.

Doctors do not yet know how to prevent breast cancer. However, you can increase your chances of detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages by understanding the need for and participating in an early detection program.

About 20% of biopsied breast lumps are cancerous. If you find a lump, act quickly–when cancer is found early there are choices for treatment, and with prompt treatment the outlook is good. In fact, most women treated for early breast cancer will be free from breast cancer for the rest of their lives. So be sure to maintain an early breast cancer detection regimen that includes annual mammograms and monthly self exams. And consider whether adding thermography to your regimen is the right choice for you.

Chemical Deodorants - They're the Pits

Kasia Organics-  Pure-odorant - Organic & Chemical-Free Deodorant

Minneapolis' leading and only true organic beauty salon, showcases TOP-SELLING  Pure-odorant, a chemical-free and certified organic line of women's deodorant. One of the most overlooked beauty products, in terms of its affect on your body, is deodorant. Often times, the general public is mislead or simply not informed of the health affects that can come with wearing "mainstream" deodorants. Pure-odorant comes straight from nature with a pure blend of organic hemp oil, aloe vera and mineral salts that soften skin and eliminate odor-causing bacteria for up to 24 hours.

Deodorants have become a part of everyday life for almost all of us. Antiperspirant deodorant is extremely common among women ... and unfortunately, so is breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Most commercial brands of antiperspirants and deodorants contain either aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium. These compounds are very soluble and are readily absorbed by the body. Once in the body, the aluminum portion of the molecule ionizes, forming free radical aluminum, which passes freely across cell membranes and forms a physical plug, that when dissolved is selectively absorbed by the liver, kidney, brain, cartilage and bone marrow.

New evidence to be published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology indicates that parabens, chemicals found in underarm cosmetics and other products, can be detected in human breast tumors. Previous suggestions have been made that certain components of underarm cosmetics may contribute to the rising incidence of breast cancer. Even women that wear no makeup, lip gloss or hair products invariably use deodorant products - body odor is seen as one of the seven deadly sins, whether you’re at the office or out with friends! This 'essential' part of our beauty routines may have serious health consequences for us down the track.

Ingredients to avoid in deodorants

While aluminium is the main deodorant/antiperspirant ingredient that has been studied for negative health effects, almost all of the common ingredients in supermarket deodorants are harmful to us. Here are the effects of some of the common underarm 'hygiene' ingredients:

* Aluminium chlorhydrate, aluminium zirconium tetrachlorhydrex gly, and other aluminium salts: We talked about the links between aluminium salts and breast cancer, as well as  Alzheimer's disease. There may be further links to disease that haven't yet been identified.

* Parabens (all types): These are derived from toluene, which can both cause reproductive harm and mimic the effect of estrogen in the body, driving the growth of cancerous cells.

* Triclosan: This ingredient is a common antibacterial which cause contact dermatitis in many people, and is classified as a pesticide by the FDA.

* Talc: Even the humble talcum powder has been regarded with suspicion by cancer researchers. It may contain asbestiform fibers (yes, these are related to asbestos) - the level of asbestiform fibers in talc is unregulated.

* Propylene glycol: According to the NIOSH this is a neurotoxin. The EPA admits that it hasn’t been fully investigated for cancer-causing potential, despite being in almost every personal care product on the market.

* Silica: This skin irritant is often contaminated with crystalline quartz, which is known to cause cancer

* Steareth-n: (Where n is any number) reacts with ethylene oxide in the manufacturing process. Ethylene oxide is a known carcinogen.

Xenoestrogens, not so beautiful.

By Kassie Kuehl, Hairstylist and Health Coach www.KasiaOrganicSalon.com

Xenoestrogens are derivatives of Estrogens. Their chemical structure acts like estrogen in the human body. They are highly estrogenic, fat-soluble and non-biodegradable compounds.

Before we move on with Xenoestrogens, a brief on Estrogens.

Estrogens are a group of steroid compounds, which are part of the hormone cycle and function as the primary female sex hormones in most female mammals.  They are also used as part of some of the oral contraceptives, in estrogen replacement therapy of postmenopausal women. They also act as a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Xenoestrogens, in addition to being highly estrogenic, are fat-soluble and non-biodegradable. Prolonged exposure to Xenoestrogens causes early menstruation and can also cause breast cancer, uterine cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, premature sexual development, uterine fibromas, heavy periods, and infertility.  Though our bodies are amazingly resilient, the immunity to endocrine disruptors is not strong enough.

Sources of Xenoestrogens:

Pesticides-

Pesticides are perhaps the biggest source of Xenoestrogens. They are highly estrogenic, and some experts estimate that the average American ingests over a pound of pesticides a year.

Xenoestrogens get into our system through our “food-chain” by means of chemical fertilizers and sprays used to disinfect crops. Most bio-accumulate, meaning they are stored in fat cells of fish, poultry and other food sources in increasing concentration until they reach the top of the food chain — where we consume them. Later, they accumulate in our fatty tissues (breast, brain, and liver) and can cause a variety of aliments as mentioned before.

Livestock’s-

A second major source of Xenoestrogens is the large amount of growth hormones given to livestock and poultry, most of which contains fat-soluble estrogens. When humans consume such live stock or their milk, we ingest those estrogens.

Organo-chlorides like dioxin (a by-product of chlorine when it is burned or processed), PCB’s, PVC’s, and some plasticizers are just a few of the many manmade chemicals that act like estrogen in our bodies. Many others have the effect of interrupting our normal endocrine function, hence the term “endocrine disruptors.”

Plastics-

Products associated with plastics such as bisphenol A and pthalates. Bisphenol-A was originally designed for use a synthetic estrogen replacement. It was found to work quite well as an antioxidant to prevent plastic from breaking down in the sunlight. Bisphenol-A is used in drinking water bottles, plastics used in baby bottles, plastics used to pack food, and some dental composites. Pthalates along with excess estrogen given to chicken used as food were suspected to cause girls as young as 18 months to begin to menstruate in Puerto Rico between 1970 and 1980. Pthalates are found in cosmetics, shampoos, hair dyes and more.

Cosmetics-

Preservatives used in skin lotions, shampoos, and body lotions such as the Parabens that include Methyl Paraben, Ethyl Paraben, Proply Paraben, Butyl Paraben. Researchers from the Department of Biology and Biochemistry of Brunel University in the United Kingdom have conducted a study and found that alkyl preservatives (methyl, ethyl, propyl  and Butyl Paraben) are weakly estrogenic. The European Union has asked the European Cosmetics and Toiletry industry about these new findings and the implication for breast cancer. These preservatives are found in the vast majority of skin and body lotions, even in natural progesterone creams. Anything absorbed through the skin is 10 times the concentration of an oral dose.

Prevention:

Prevention of Xenoestrogens from entering our system can be done by either avoiding consumption of the very sources of Xenoestrogens if possible or by choosing organic and natural products for consumption. For example, consume organically grown produce and live stock only. Use cosmetics that are prepared without the use parabens.  Avoid usage of plastic products that contain Bisphenol-A and pthalates.

Broccoli, and in particular, the indole 3 carbinol (I3C) found in broccoli, interferes with xenoestrogens. I3C increases the good estrogen (2-hydroxyestrone) to bad estrogen (16-alpha-hydroxyestrone) ratio by increasing the detox enzyme CP450 in the liver.

Besides the food we consume the next biggest source of Xenoestrogens could be Cosmetics. Kassie (owner of Kasia Salon/Skin Care.) feels strongly that - what we put on our skin is a major result of our hormonal problems. Skin is the largest organ of the body, acting like a huge sponge. She says.  “Purely avoiding parabens, we’ve tagged our retail with broccoli seeds ready to  sprout or plant, yielding anti-cancer phytonutrient found in cruciferous vegetables, offering an abundance of Indole-3-carbinol (I3C)”.
