CBD won’t make you high-but playing with THC, it may be your new bud!

I know you’ve wondered this.

Q. Can CBD oil get you high?

Screen Shot 2019-01-23 at 9.03.21 AM.png

HELLO, my fellow wellness seeker!

As a holistic lifestyle and beauty educator, confusion about food (diets), supplement and product choices for optimal health and beauty never appears to wane.

The same has been true for my side hustle as a cannabis coach and product creator. Because medical marijuana is novel to Americans and perception of cannaphobia, it makes sense that people are completely curious and confused about all this buzz.

Even though MN is a non-legal Marijuana state (recreational), there is a large population seeking medical help from cannabis medical providers, and equally CBD users seek CBD for everyday therapeutic support.

So back to the question - and my answer.

No, CBD is completely non-psychoactive.

What you will experience, however, is feeling more relaxed, but not that “couch lock” relax. You can function at 110% with more focus and calm.

Want to learn more? Read below to dig deeper into this topic.

cbd and thc

CBD vs. THC

A common worry for those considering using CBD is the possibility of getting high. It’s no wonder with the strong stigma cannabis has had over years of propaganda. Let’s dig in about the difference between CBD and THC.

CBD and THC are only two of over 100 compounds called cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD may positively impact stress, pain, rest, and skin health.

THC has psychotropic properties and is associated with feelings of sedation, anxiety, elation, relaxation, and sometimes hallucinations and delusions, among other effects.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

To fully understand why you won’t get high from CBD, you need to know that CBD oil can be made from both hemp and marijuana.

CBD is, in fact, totally legal when extracted from industrial hemp, which is the source of CBD for all Evoq CBD supplements. Full spectrum CBD oil made from hemp will contain negligible levels of THC (<0.3%), because hemp is grown and used for its sturdy stalks and low levels of THC.

If you prefer to not chance it, our Evoq line contains broad spectrum formulated options, which are specifically decarboxylated to contain zero THC. I know, all you worriers out there - we’ve got your ECS covered.

To reframe and drive into the leaf a bit deeper, THC is found in high quantities in marijuana and low quantities in hemp, the opposite is true for CBD. The CBD in CBD products are most often extracted from hemp as opposed to marijuana since it is naturally higher in CBD and low in THC.

If you are concerned about getting high, you may want to avoid CBD products made from marijuana (high in THC )unless you can confirm the quantities of CBD and THC. This can be done by third-party lab testing, and any self-respecting company should be checking their products for heavy metals, mold, pesticides and cannabinoid levels.

So the long and short of it, CBD get you high?” is no, it can’t. The reason for this is that the process of extracting CBD oil is unlikely to produce oil with high levels THC, and CBD on its own doesn’t get you high.

A Focus On Plant Genetics

We utilize certified organic hemp plants when extracting CBD and are specifically bred to contain the highest concentrations of CBD and the lowest concentrations of THC. Our growers sustainably take advantage of the fact that hemp is naturally high in CBD and breed the plants to enhance this factor.

CBD products are created through one of three methods: by pushing CO2 through the plant at high pressures or by using ethanol or a carrier oil. All three methods have their benefits when extracting CBD from the hemp plant for a pure and near zero to negligible trace of THC.

What about dosage to get noticable benefits from CBD?

At low levels (1-20 mg), CBD makes you feel relaxed; it takes the edge off the day without making you feel sedated. At higher levels (20 mg+), you will feel very relaxed and possibly sleepy. Each person responds differently, so it’s best to start low and work up in serving size.

CBD to Reverse Marijuana Side Effects (paranoia)
If you’re one of the few in a illegal Marijuana state, you can still benefits from utilizing CBD as a antagonist to reduce the side effects from taking medical marijuana. Feel free to email me if you would like someone to coach you through dosing - it’s my specialty! (hello@beautyecology.com)

A few final facts.

  • Medical marijuana is cannabis that you purchase in a dispensary and/or by a health care provider in states where such sales are permitted.

  • It’s the cannabinoid THC in cannabis that is responsible for the high feeling.

  • CBD does not get you high, rather this cannabinoid dull the high effect of THC.

  • Medical marijuana strains with higher amounts of CBD than THC are less likely to get you high.

  • Most states require labeling of marijuana cultivars to indicate the ratio of CBD:THC in its products so you're aware.

In conclusion...

Many chronic health issues have inflammation as an underlying cause.  If CBD is a potent anti-inflammatory agent, that tells us that CBD is a primary player in healing chronic disease by reducing inflammation.   THC is not always needed for benefits.  If you do dose THC, combining it with micro dosing (taking a small amount of cannabis), CBD-dominant cultivars are less likely to make you high.

10 Cannabinoids You Need to Know About

THC and CBD… is that it?

Acting as the two main “ingredients” in marijuana, they’re scientifically called cannabinoids.

But, little do most know, there are DOZENS, if not hundreds, of different cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.

Here, we explore the most studied -   All 10 of them.

THC

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.36.19 PM.png

Often known as marijuana’s “flagship” cannabinoid, THC is the poster boy of weed, and is scientifically named Delta(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol.

As one of the “main” active ingredients in weed, this is what turns you from sober to stoned!.

Not only does it get you high, but it has medicinal values to it as well!s.

It can treat:

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Neuropathy

  • PTSD

  • Cancer

  • Alzheimer’s

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Parkinson’s

  • Arthritis

  • Asthma

  • Glaucoma

  • AIDS/HIV

THC is obviously quite diverse in its abilities to treat diseases, and is held in high esteem among cannabis lovers.

BD

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.40.29 PM.png

As you can expect, after THC, there is CBD.

Known as Cannabidiol, this is the cannabinoid most associated with medicinal properties.

With it’s great healing capabilities, here are some of the illnesses or issues that it can help alleviate:

  • Pain relief and inflammation

  • Epilepsy

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Anticancer

  • Schizophrenia

  • Anti-tumor

  • Anti-anxiety

There are even more benefits to CBD than what’s listed.

This video below will tell you everything you need to know about CBD.

CBC

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.36.19 PM.png

Unbeknownst to most, there are more than two ingredients inside of marijuana.

One of the more recent discoveries is a cannabinoid called Cannabichromene – CBC for short.

Although the average pot smoker is ignorant to the fact that this exists, CBC is the third most common cannabinoid in weed, and can even rival the amount of CBD content in certain strains!

CBC does NOT get you “high”… The receptors that it binds to are linked to pain perception – the Vanilloid Receptor 1 (TRPV) and the Transient Receptor Ankyring 1 (TRPA1).

CBC has some of its own unique medical properties.

They include:

  • Anti-fungal

  • Anti-bacterial

  • Antidepressant

  • Encourages new brain cell growth (neurogenesis)

  • Anti-inflammatory

There was a study done that says it even helps digestive issues associated with diarrhea and constipation. While these benefits can be found within the cannabinoid CBC, they work even better in tandem with THC.  This effect is known as the entourage effect. Essentially, isolating CBC and creating a product of just pure CBC would NOT be as effective without its other cannabinoid friends.

CBN

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.41.36 PM.png

CBN, or Cannabinol, can be found as a metabolite of THC.

Due to the oxidation of the plant’s chemicals, this means that it’s a byproduct of THC through the aging process..

Among having similar benefits that the other cannabinoids have, its most notable characteristic is that it promotes bone growth.

In most cannabis plants, THC can go up to around 30%.

In comparison, CBN RARELY exceeds 1%!

As for a more mainstream application of this cannabinoid, it would be best suited for its sleep aid properties.

When you’re feeling tired from smoking cannabis, it’s likely due to cannabinol.

CBG

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.42.35 PM.png

CBG, or Cannabigerol, is known to treat digestive issues, glaucoma, cancer, skin conditions, and acts as both an antiseptic and a neuroprotective.

As a precursor to THC, CBG converts into THC as marijuana matures over time.

Because of this, there is often a lower amount in most strains. CBG can usually be found in amounts up to 1% of the plant!

But without CBG, we wouldn’t have the weed we know and love today. It is the “mother cannabinoid” and we have it to thank for producing our desired THC and CBD molecules.

However, CBG has properties that can be utilized for medical purposes so growers and researchers are working on finding ways to increase the amount found in plants.

Since it’s a precursor, some breeders are experimenting with selective genetics and extraction of CBG in the earlier stages of cannabis growth.

THCv

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.43.40 PM.png

If you can pronounce this properly on your first try, you deserve an award.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin is a chemical structure that is very similar to that of THC, and will help potentiate the effects of it.

Similar to THC, THCv has some great benefits attached to it.

THCv is an anticonvulsant, neuroprotective, and more uniquely, it can even promote weight loss!

In this study, it shows that THCv has potential for reducing body fat and increasing energy levels.

Additionally, a study by GW pharmaceuticals showed promising evidence for THCv treating Type 2 diabetes.

CBDv

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.45.02 PM.png

CBDv, or Cannabidivarin, is to CBD what THCv is to THC.

Mostly found in indicas, this cannabinoid has powerful anti-convulsant properties and is shown to suppress the expression of genes associated with epilepsy!  GW pharmaceuticals actually began a Phase II for clinical studies of cannabidivarin in epilepsy in 2015.

They’re planning for CBDv to become “the next generation of standard epilepsy medication”.

Although it is a very confident statement, the future is looking bright for cannabinoids becoming legitimate medicines for a huge list of diseases and disorders.

Delta(8) – THC

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.45.09 PM.png

Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol is what we refer to as THC normally but, did you know there is a Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol as well?!

Although it is quite similar to Delta-9-THC, its potency is nowhere near as strong.

They do, however, have similar effects which include:

  • Antiemetic,

  • Appetite-stimulating

  • Anti-nausea

  • Anticancer

  • Antitumoral

The U.S. National Cancer Institute conducted research to confirm the benefits Delta-8-THC.

Even though these were studies conducted by the NCI, which is funded by the government, we’ve still seen these chemicals demonized by the same government and not approved by the FDA…

THCa

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.41.36 PM.png

The last two cannabinoids (that you didn’t know about) are to be found in the plant substance before they’re decarboxylated.

This means that you don’t receive their unique benefits if you heat them up.

But what exactly are these benefits?

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Antioxidant

  • Improves gastrointestinal functions

  • Neuroprotective

  • Antiemetic

  • Insecticide

The insecticide capabilities in THCa may prove to be useful by adding raw cannabis oil to lotions and creams for topical use.

These benefits present a good reason as to why individuals may consider consuming raw cannabis!

Some might even say… superfood!

CBDa

Screen Shot 2018-06-03 at 10.45.09 PM.png

As with THCa, CBDa’s benefits can only be redeemed if you eat them raw.

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Antioxidant

  • Painkiller

  • Anti-proliferative

Anti-proliferatives help slow the spread of malignant cells in the body.

So combined with the other anti-cancer properties of the other cannabinoids we’ve mentioned, the cannabis plant in raw form could be a powerful cancer-fighting substance.

Conclusion about Cannabinoids:

Marijuana plays hosts to plenty of “ingredients” that can help with several different medical issues.

Researchers and growers are working desperately to extract certain cannabinoids to help with specific problems, which will eventually become a huge help in the medical field.

For now in MN, we rely on the benefits of CBD rich extracts.  Shop www.evoqbeauty.com

Hemp VS Marijuana. What's the difference?

What’s the difference?

kk.png

I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about HEMP as of late.   In all varieties, you see it in the market as hemp seeds, hemp powder, and hemp milk. It’s a good alternative as a vegan protein source. I love it in a protein shake as a clean source of protein - minus the bloat.  Hemp is from the plant, Cannabis. This is where it starts to get confusing.

Marijuana is certainly a product that has crossed your consciousness – perhaps you’ve read about the fight for legalization across the country, or you know someone who uses it to treat a health issue, or maybe you enjoy CBD oil to relax and unwind your mind.

Let’s dig in on the term cannabis. Many people are using the term cannabis instead of marijuana for the sake to de-stigmatize the plant or to elevate it to a more professional level.

The big confusion is knowing how the three terms – hemp, cannabis, and marijuana – are related. And, related they are!

So, here are some super simple facts:

#1: Both hemp and marijuana are cannabis, so the term cannabis can be used to describe either hemp or marijuana.

#2: Hemp and marijuana are different.

#3: Hemp contains less than 0.3% THC – the cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that confers the “high.”

#4: Marijuana is the product that contains more than (sometimes, a lot more than) 0.3% THC.

#5: Both hemp and marijuana contain other cannabinoids (active ingredients in the cannabis plant), such as CBD, which does not confer a “high.”

Back to the confusing issue mentioned in the first paragraphhemp oil.

Hemp oil in large bottles has been available alongside other specialty salad oils in some food markets. The food-based hemp products typically do not contain a significant amount of CBD. Even in some CBD oils, it’s not always clear how much ACTIVE cannabinoids are in a “hemp CBD oil.”   As a formulator of CBD rich organic products, I see this as the most common misunderstanding and sneaky marketing ploy by many companies. It’s still the wild west out there.

In the past few years, hemp oils that contain CBD have flooded the market. Buyer beware, because many times it's confusing to see how much truly "active CBD" is present in a oil.  These oils come in much smaller bottles with droppers for dosing smaller amounts and cost a lot more. You can take alone or add to smoothies and teas and recipes.

hemp

Got it? Hemp and marijuana are cannabis, but hemp is not marijuana.  We’ve given some answers and perhaps spurred more questions, maybe about CBD. Let us know what you’d like to know, and we’ll try to address in an upcoming update.

Till then, enjoy life and keep your endocannabinoid receptors, mind, body and soul in balance!      Warmly,  Kassandra

Facing Cannabis - How Your Skin Benefits.

Treating troubled skin can feel like we’re fighting an uphill battle. From acne to eczema, there are thousands of “solutions” including pills and prescription ointments. Some of us have success. However, others face a fruitless quest for clear and healthy skin.

Fortunately, there's CBD (cannabidiol), which is a plant-based (phytocannabinoid), natural remedy that works with our body's own system.

As we previously discussed, our endocannabinoid system has cannabinoid receptors. Many of these receptors are found in our skin.

Imbalances or damaged receptors cause our skin to flare up. This underlying condition is caused by daily stress, the environment, or even our busy lifestyles. And can cause our skin to present with anything from psoriasis to oily skin. CBD interacts with these receptors on a molecular “lock & key” level to repair our endocannabinoid system and restore balance.

CBD has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties that treat a wide array of skin conditions. It’s one of the keys that unlocks a healthy, balanced endocannabinoid system.

Another component of this “lock & key” system is Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), which is a fatty acid that our bodies naturally produce. As we age, our skin loses GLA and it causes our skin to lose moisture.

Both CBD and GLA are fundamentally essential for optimal skin health. We bring the best of both worlds (and plants) together for a plump and hydrated glow with our skin booster made with one part GLA and one part CBD.

One Part GLA

Our organically derived hemp synergizes with our rich GLA seed oil formula for maximum results.

The reason we wrinkle and develop dry, dull skin after menopause is because we can no longer make GLA from our food. Over time, our epidermis may lose as much as 50% of its thickness, which accelerates water loss.

When our skin can’t produce enough protective oils, we face a lowered immune system, increased inflammation, and specific immune responses that result in skin flare ups including eczema and psoriasis.

GLA is critical to repair the lipid barrier of our skin, so it can retain hydration for plumper, supple, and smooth skin.

One Part CBD

Our CBD oil affiniatizes with our endocannabinoid system and our potent GLA oils to help our skin grow new cells, discard old ones, and reduce inflammation.

CBD stimulates our body’s endocannabinoid system and reduces free radicals, which encourages our skin to repair and rejuvenate itself.

Harmful free radicals that bombard our skin come from UV and IR (infrared technology saturation). These accelerate ageing, cancer, and impair our skin’s ability to heal. By proactively filling our receptors with CBD, we get ahead of the game and protect our skin from long-term damage.

CBD also works to increase the rate of absorption of other compounds into the skin. Together, with its own properties, the use of CBD in topical cosmeceutical applications results in healthier, protected, more youthful-looking skin and makes it the ideal basis for a new era of groundbreaking, effective, cosmetic treatments.

FULL NATURAL TALENT LIST:

*Borage oil, *Evening Primrose Oil, *Black Currant Oil, *MCT Oil, *Rosehip Oil, Cannabis (50MG), Blue Chamomile Oil, Vitamin E Oil.

Here’s how our products (rich in our essential GLA oils and infused with 100mg of CBD) alleviate troubling skin conditions:

CBD for Acne

Our body’s endogenous cannabinoids can induce apoptosis of human sebocytes (cells most commonly found in the skin) by telling their CB2 receptors to start the process of cell death.  But our endocannabinoids are easily degraded, so their effects don’t last long. CBD also has powerful antibacterial properties.

CBD for Psoriasis

Keratinocyte is a type of skin cell that produces a protein called keratin, and this protein makes up the skin’s outer layer.  In psoriasis, there is rapid multiplication and growth of these keratinocytes, which accounts for the skin changes associated with this skin disease.  This is, of course, made worse by inflammation.

Now, CBD has the ability to stop the proliferation of keratinocytes. How it does this isn’t yet clear, but the PPAR receptors may seem to play a role since their activation has led to the inhibition of epithelial cell proliferation.

CBD for Basal Cell Carcinoma

It’s a known fact that CBD has shown the ability to control cancer cells and prevent them from growing, proliferating, and spreading. CBD can even prevent angiogenesis, and without its blood supply, cancer growths won’t develop, spread, and invade other tissues.

SPF: Sunscreen Basics + Strategies

As the summer gets on it's way, let's make sure our SPF facts are up to snuff.

GettyImages-466717057.jpg
bag

Why sunscreen daily?
Let me count the ways! Starting with the fact that 90% of visible signs of aging are caused by the sun. We are exposed to the sun daily (including UVA rays you might not notice) and your body counts sun exposure cumulatively. We may get wiser over the years, but we also collect more sun-time. And the damage shows up many, many years later.

Chemical Sunscreen
Containing ingredients like avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate and others, chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays, transform them into heat, which is then released from your skin. ‘Chemical’ sounds like a bad word, but it’s not here – it just describes how it functions. Chemical sunscreens take about 20 minutes to activate after application, so lotion up before heading out.

s7-1292773_lifestyle.png

Physical Sunscreen
Physical sunscreens are ones with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and work like a mirror, deflecting the sun’s rays from your skin. They can be less likely to clog pores, cause less allergy issues, and are ideal for everyday use, especially on your face. And they’ve come a long way from the white-nose days, so don’t worry about that. Protection is instant once applied.

UVA vs. UVB Rays
The A and B letters are scientific, but all you have to remember is A for Aging and B for Burning. UVB rays cause familiar results – sunburns.  UVA rays do quieter damage, causing wrinkles, skin cancer, and visible signs of aging. UVA rays come through clouds and windows, which is why we preach daily sunscreen.

Broad Spectrum
Sunscreen labeled ‘Broad Spectrum’ protects against both UVA and UVB rays. If it’s not labeled as such, chances are it’s only covering UVB rays (think: your less expensive body sunscreens you’ll find at the drug store). You’re best off with Broad Spectrum to make sure you’re covered, especially when it comes to your face.

glasses

The SPF Numbers
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a standard laboratory measurement of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB damage to our skin. (Important distinction, it doesn’t measure the impact of those aging UVA rays.) If it normally takes you ten minutes to burn, generously-applied SPF 30 would keep you from burning for 300 minutes, or about five hours. (Usual Time To Burn x SPF = Protection Time). Our take? Math is not fun at the beach, so do yourself a favor and just re-apply often and liberally.

How much sunscreen?
Conventional wisdom says a ‘shot glass’ worth over your entire body, although I suggest a bit more.  All depends on height and weight.   Apply more frequently if you’re sweating or in and out of the water.

Over or used as makeup?
I'm a big fan of  straight up sunscreen as a foundation with SPF to ensure coverage.  Our clients love our  Tinted UV Protect 35 SPF facial lotion that is incredibly light and lightly tinted to blend into most skin types (haven't found anyone yet that it has not).  The other great option is to dust with our La Bella Donna Minerals to assure protection at a 25 SPF and  non-nano, so that you do not loose your makeup (and coverage) through your pores throughout the day.

When was this stuff invented?
Want to sound smart at your summer barbecue? The first major commercial sunscreen was sold in 1936, by the founder of L’Oreal. Ten years later, it improved dramatically for soldiers in World War II. “SPF” as a standard was adopted in 1974. And before all that, ancient cultures used olive oil, rice extract, zinc oxide, and other compounds for thousands of years.
