How do we test for hair loss? It’s so confusing for my clients…but there is a path.

No, it’s not serum testosterone.

No, its not your thyroid.

And No, its not DHT - the androgenic hormone alone.

Hair loss is generally pointing back to so called androgenic alopecia; essentially, this is just a fancy way to talk about hair loss caused by high levels of androgens (especially one hormone, a metabolite of testosterone, called dihydrotestosterone or DHT).

Here's why. Insulin is a hormone that our body uses to carry glucose to our cells so that they can use it for energy. What we want to be is insulin-sensitive – meaning that the insulin our body produces will be able to take care of the glucose we ingest.

But we can become ‘insulin resistant’ and that means that what used to be enough insulin to carry the glucose is now not enough.

This is what is happening when we get fasting insulin levels checked at our doctor’s office and see that it is high.

Over time, it’s possible that our body won’t be able to maintain that high level of insulin output to take care of our glucose.

We all know that Stress can have a detrimental impact on mental health.

Today we’re going to crack open how stress effects our health, and how this then roll’s over into our outer beauty. Essentially, how it accelerates aging, where - and how.  

Long term stress can eventually become chronic stress, which leads to depression, anxiety, insomnia, and frequent fatigue.

The release of the stress hormone, Cortisol, throws your other hormones off balance, causing imperfections to appear on the skin. Stress can also affect your gut, by outweighing the good and bad bacteria that sits in it. Uneven bacteria in the gut can cause rashes and hives, as well as unwanted pimples.

There’s the added factor of diet when you’re experiencing stress. 🏋🏻‍♀️ Does Face Yoga Build Muscle Structure for Ant-Aging? [busted]

Do you need to exercise your face? 🏋🏻‍♀️

There are endless tactics to defy aging on the market, and for all you holistic gals, you may have seen inference to face exercises or ‘face yoga’ as the trendy new way to strengthen the muscles of your face to help fight the signs of aging (like sagging jowls and wrinkles).

Does it work? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀ I research and deliver evidence-based beauty and so the first thing to say is that there are no scientific studies to verify the claims that these sorts of face workouts are effective. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Therefore, my professional opinion on this is going to be based on the first principles combined with logic. ⠀⠀

Can doing facial exercises actually ‘build’ the muscles of the face? We know that muscle growth comes about from damage of the muscle via active use – like weight-lifting in the gym. The damage induced stimulates a whole host of responses which culminate in the muscle becoming bigger and stronger.

If you have ever tried to put on noticeable muscle mass in the gym, you will know that this is actually a lot more difficult to achieve then it sounds and even with meticulous attention to lifestyle, diet and workout planning, one can and should only expect small gains to be made over time.

Facial yoga does not involve any weight-bearing and, even though these are small muscles, they would still require a decent enough stimulus to initiate the muscle growing process. So based on this I would suggest that no, facial exercises cannot build muscles in the face. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I think we need to ask...why would we want to enlarge the muscles of your face? I think a more realistic question is: Is muscle atrophy what causes the signs of aging? Loss of muscle as we age is a natural part of aging and certainly, some of that occurs in the face but the aging face is due to an interplay of many factors like fat loss, loss of collagen and elastin in the dermis of the skin and changes to the epidermis. ⠀

Though facial exercises are certainly not harmful and may create blood flow - it is very unlikely to bring about significant, noticeable changes to your skin or facial structure. How to Choose a Moisturizer: Is Oily Skin the thirstiest of them all?

Let’s talk one of the most basic aspects to good skin care: moisturizer.

HYDRATION + MOISTURE + SUPPLE SKIN!

Tell me pretty lady, have you asked yourself these questions?

Why does some moisturizer break me out while other moisturizers seem to do nothing, no matter how much or how often I apply it?

While I’m not a HUGE believer in skin types the way traditional skincare sites give, I do know that this conversation does come down to the nature of your skin.

The goal is to understand when to use an oil or a moisturizer - and using a moisturizer that works with your skin or against your skin.

SIMPLIFYING HYDRATION

Did you know that there are 2 main types of moisturizers that work in different ways to hydrate your skin?
 

There are water-based and oil-based moisturizers (Ie: a balm, ointment or serum). Water-based moisturizers pull water into your skin while oil-based moisturizers prevent water from evaporating from your skin.

The product you’ll want will depend on your unique skin.

For instance:

If you have dry skin, you will want a water-based moisturizer to infuse your skin with deep hydration.

If you live in a dry environment, you’ll want an oil-based product since it prevents water from evaporating from your skin.

And if you have dry skin and live in a dry environment? You’ll need a water-based and oil-based moisturizer! I personally always combine them both due to the different molecular weights and nutrient values.

Most women pick the wrong moisturizer because they simply don’t know what type of skin they have or their skin is always changing.

 All too often I hear people with oily skin saying they do NOT have dry skin.

GET THIS…… this may be technically true, but did you know that oily skin is the type that thirsts for water the most?

You heard it right: Oily skin is so very thirsty that it produces extra amounts of oil to prevent more water from evaporating! It is desperate to hold on to the moisture it does have—and wiping oil off your face only makes the situation worse since signals your skin to produce more and more and more oil—it’s a vicious cycle!

It’s hard to. know what’s real and what's hype in a FOMO world.

Just in case you were wondering if all the latest “Scroll Stopping” Instagram skin trends were legit….I’ve got some thoughts and opinions. - and obviously, there is NO judgment if you want to embellish your checkbook in any of the below, and they make you feel good - because it all comes down to self - love Darlin.

Let’s break it down.


Skincare Needs to Be Stored in the Fridge



I’ve seen “organic” raw skin care that actually needs refrigeration. You may be aware of other products that contain live bacteria, in which case they may also require a fridge. But nothing else does. Everything sold OTC should be stability tested before it is sent to market. It is tested in extreme cold, and extreme heat, to ensure that it does not lose efficacy, or grow MOLD. Natural and safe can be a partner. Buyer beware.

Putting an eye creme in teh fridge is totally cool and cooling on your skin - knock yourself out. But fridges do nothing to sustain or enhance the efficacy of your product and are completely unnecessary.

Gold

Oh my- where is OZ when you need that yellow brick road to reality? This trend is is a trend to sucker the “prestige.” Pretty packaging and iridescence on the skin does jack shit for your skin, but it does leak your checkbook.

If the world currency changes from fiat money, you may b win luck. Now….Jewellery? Absolutely. Skincare? You’re literally paying extra for something that in a flake form, would never penetrate, and in a micronized form, is unproven.

Like jewelry, if it has 24k gold in it and you can whack your prices up.




Crystals

Again, if you are into crystals, then nothing I say will matter because beliefs are strong. Hell, I LOVE crystals, but we have to hold our OWN power. I am a formulator, I’ve seen all the company hypes on selling skin lines crystals to create a theme and “STORY.” Not ageless skin.

Light up your room with agates, but as to the skin, it’s a good story but won’t firm up your dermis.

Jade (and the many types of mineral and crystal) Rollers

Tools like deep cleansing with a Clarisonic, NuFace Micro-current and Dermal Rolling are functional and visible.

If this tool makes you sit still and chill out whilst you massage your face for 10 minutes, roll on.

All good ladies, but again, if you are buying these units based on a brand telling you that once you start rolling, it increases circulation and gives a dewy glow’, save your cash.

The odds are that after the first few uses not seeing a miraculously ‘lift’, you’ll never use it again and will become another bathroom collector.

As you inhale – slowly count backward – 3, 2, 1

As you exhale – slowly count backward – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Repeat 3 more times.



STEP 3: DEEP RELAXATION [3 MINUTES]

Continue breathing slowly and normally.

Slowly say the following statements to yourself.

After you say each statement, imagine those muscles becoming soft and deeply relaxed.

“All the muscles of my head and neck are soft and deeply relaxed”

and

“All the muscles of my shoulders, chest and arms are soft and deeply relaxed”

and

“All the muscles of my stomach and back are soft and deeply relaxed”

and

“All the muscles of my waist and bottom are soft and deeply relaxed”

and

“All the muscles of my legs and feet are soft and deeply relaxed”

Don’t worry if you don’t say the words exactly as they are written. It is the intention that is important not the words.

STEP 4: IMAGINATION [2 MINUTES]

Use your imagination to be in your favorite happy place.

As you start to deeply imagine your happy place, perhaps you might be able to:

see your happy place or

hear your happy place or

smell your happy place or

touch or feel your happy place.

Focus your attention on any one part of your happy place.

Hold your attention there for two minutes.




STEP 5: POSITIVE SUGGESTION [3 MINUTES]

Say to yourself any positive suggestions that can help you achieve your goal.

For example:


“I am confident and relaxed when I talk in public.”

OR

“I only want to eat healthy and nutritious food.”

OR

“I exercise for 30 minutes every day.”

OR

“I can achieve my ideal weight of _____ stone”

Repeat 10 times.

STEP 6: FINISH

Slowing count up from 1 to 10.

Open your eyes and say to yourself three times:

“I am fully alert and completely out of hypnosis.”

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Well done you have now completed your 10-minute self-hypnosis exercise!

To achieve maximum results you should complete self-hypnosis every day for one month.

The best times are first thing in the morning or last thing at night, but you can do it on the train or bus going to work if you prefer!

Some people like to listen to relaxing music while they do self-hypnosis.
