Sugar... glycation and it's effect on your skin.

The story of AGE and your skin.

As Halloween fast approaches, and then the holiday season to nip it in the butt, the sugary treats will be on the rise.  We're here to give you forewarning and bring our "Informed Beautes'" up to speed of how sugar effects the skin.

Conventionally, we know inflammation is bad for the body, and it's influence on our skin and hair. Most women/men are shocked to find out that excess refined sugar is a big contributor to skin aging.   The culprit to be blamed for this is a natural process called glycation, where blood sugar attaches itself to proteins and makes way for AGEs (Advanced Glyacting End products).  These AGE molecules  can cause premature aging, skin dullness and sagging skin and these molecules are directly linked with sugar.

Impacted by Sugar!

Recent research and studies indicate that sugars in the form of added carbohydrates or refined sugars can lead to premature aging, sagging skin and more wrinkles. When we consume simple sugars in the form of starches such as rice, bread, potatoes and sweets, there is a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. This blood sugar then combines with the protein molecules and gives birth to the new AGE molecule. Apart from the usual sugar-related health impact, AGEs also affect the skin in the following ways:

  • Damages elastin and skin protein collagen, which are responsible for maintaining the skin’s elasticity and firmness.
  • Restricts the body’s ability to utilize and produce anti-oxidants, making the body more vulnerable to damage by free radicals.
  • Makes your skin more vulnerable and prone to sun damage (which is one of the leading causes of skin aging) by deactivating the body’s natural antioxidant enzymes.

The more sugar you consume, the more vulnerable you are to the damaging effects of glycation and skin aging. The sugar impact is felt mostly after the age of 35, as tissue regeneration slows down and glycation increases.

Prevention

To prevent the damage caused by sugar you need to cut down on the added sugars from your diet. Though it is not possible to completely eliminate sugars (such as sugars in the form of fructose and sucrose, which are unavoidable and produce end products such as glucose and galactose, which can be easily digested so eliminating these natural sugars is not required), here is what you need to do to avoid damage from high consumption of sugar:

  • Avoid foods with added and high sugar content such as sweets, chocolates, carbonated beverages
  • Limit the consumption of simple carbohydrates such as potato, pasta, white bread and white rice
  • Increase protein intake to control carb cravings

To counteract the damage caused by sugar you need to:

  • Replace processed sugars with natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables
  • Limit refined sugar consumption to less than 10% of your total calorie intake
  • Supplement your diet with essential vitamins such as a daily dose of 1mg of Vitamin B1 and B6
  • Fight the detrimental effect of AGEs by reducing/avoiding sun exposure especially between 10 A.M and 4 P.M when UV rays are at their strongest by using a high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen
  • Increase the intake of vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids by eating brightly colored vegetables, fruits and cold water fish such as salmon and sardines. Add a handful of nuts to your diet and sip on antioxidant-rich green tea instead of coffee or regular black tea

Is your expensive fragrance good for you?

Perfume must be the most ironic of gifts: Perfect pretty little bottles with perfect pretty little names, filled with sweet smelling petrochemicals(yes, you read right). Did you know that 95 percent of the chemicals used in perfume are derived from petroleum, many of them quite toxic? Great!

For 2010 you can give a gift that triggers delight, not rashes and asthma.

You’d think that perfume would be made from what it smells like. A scent that creates the beautiful image of lilies must be made from lilies, right? Wrong.

Modern perfumes are almost always made from synthetic fragrances that are most commonly synthesized from petroleum distillates.

In the late 19th century the first synthetic fragrance was created (from coal-tar) in a laboratory. Not only did this greatly expand the perfumer’s repertory of scents to work with, but it also democratized the availability of perfume by making it so much cheaper to produce. Very costly raw natural materials (like ambergris, musk and rare botanicals) that had been used to create luxury perfumes were now simply whipped up in the lab using dredged waste by-products of the industrial revolution.

It also allowed for the creation of scents that perfumers were unable to capture before–such as the smell of lilac and lily.

The science of fragrance is really rather mind-boggling.

The fact petrochemicals can be manipulated into rapturous scent is an illusion worthy of Houdini. But magic aside, a 1991 study performed by the EPA found that numerous potentially hazardous chemicals are commonly used in fragrance, including acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalool, and methylene chloride.

According to Material Data Safety Sheets, when inhaled these chemicals can cause central nervous system disorders, dizziness, nausea, slurred speech, drowsiness, irritation to the mouth, throat, eyes, skin, and lungs, kidney damage, headache, respiratory failure, ataxia, and fatigue, among other things.

Another study found two groups of hazardous or potentially hazardous chemicals commonly used in perfumes: phthalates and synthetic musks.

Since perfumes are applied to the skin, repeated exposure of relatively concentrated doses may contribute substantially to our overall exposure to these chemicals. And because of the high-volume use of these chemicals, they have become widely distributed through both the natural and the urban environment-endangering natural ecosytems while also further increasing our exposure to them.

The FDA does little to regulate the cosmetics industry, and “fragrance” is considered a trade secret and thus ingredient disclosure is not required. Only a handful of ingredients are banned and personal care products and cosmetics do not require approval or testing before hitting the shelves.

Even so, according to the FDA fragrances are responsible for 30 percent of all allergic reactions. Many point to perfume as a very high-risk cosmetic product for those who suffer from asthma. And we always thought that perfume was supposed to make us feel good.

The good news is that there is an alternative–good old perfume made from natural materials.

You won’t find herbs, grasses, flowers and spice on any EPA lists. Not only are natural perfume ingredients more in harmony with the body, but they are, well, natural.

Kasia Organic Salon looks to offer pure and plant "fumes" into the new year.

Yerba Mate plant effects your Beautiful Health….infused Kasia Tea.

Yerba Mate is an amazing plant….infused  Fair Trade Kasia Tea.

"It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value."

Yerba Mate is a sought after source of difficult to find important nutrients: Vitamins B-1, B-2, A, riboflavin, carotene, colin, pantothenic acid, inositol and 15 types of amino acids (F. Alikaridis 1987). It also contains significant quantities of the all important iron, potassium, and magnesium minerals, something Green Tea lacks. As noted by The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society, "It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value."

More about Yerba Mate

Just about everyone has felt the jittery side effects of stimulants at one time or another. Yerba mate, in contrast, appears to give your brain a boost without making you nervous. You feel alert and sharp. Interestingly, it actually works as a tonic for the central nervous system, calming the body and the mind. It has also been shown to improve mood and concentration, reduce anxiety, and prevent mental fatigue.

How it works

There are 196 chemicals in yerba mate that are active in the body including B vitamins; Vitamins A, C, and E; and the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and selenium. And mate has 11 polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. Plus, it's high in chlorophyll, which gives it its rich green color and may offer additional antioxidant benefits.

But the most important chemical in mate is one by the name of "mateine." Mateine is a xanthine alkaloid. You might have heard of other xanthines, such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine. Mateine appears to possess the best combination of xanthine properties. Like other xanthines, it stimulates the central nervous system, but unlike others, it doesn't appear to be addicting. Unlike caffeine, it isn't a strong diuretic, so it's much less likely to dehydrate the body.

Mistakenly, many people think of all xanthines in herbal supplements as caffeine. But whether you call it mateine or mistake it for caffeine, a cup of mate will likely give you quite a lift. For a quick comparison, 50 grams of yerba mate (a typical cup of the tea) with a typical mateine content of 1 to 1.5% by weight contains the equivalent of 500 to 750 mg of caffeine. But a typical cup of coffee contains only 80 to 175 mg of caffeine, and a cup of tea has about half that amount. Thus, we're looking at over twice the "active" ingredient. You might achieve lift off with mate, without the side effects associated with other popular stimulants.

Increased energy and fat burning

The result of the chemical combination in mate may, obviously, be a BIG increase in energy and fat burning. One of the most remarkable abilities of mate appears to be that it gives users energy without the muscle tension associated with caffeine. In fact, all xanthines, with the exception of caffeine, cause smooth muscle relaxation.

Mate may help support long-term energy by maintaining energy production with oxygen for longer periods of time, which burns more calories, improves heart efficiency, and delays buildup of endurance, robbing waste products, such as lactic acid that are created by anaerobic glycolysis (energy production without oxygen). One indicator that it is working to burn more fat is a drop in something called the respiratory quotient (RQ), which indicates a rise in the proportion of fat being oxidized or burned in the body. Science is revealing that it also helps stabilize blood sugar to potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Other powerful benefits

Improved sleep:

Incredibly, mate does not interfere with sleep. In fact, it improves sleep and increases rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as well as the time spent in deep sleep (delta sleep). Many people report that they require less sleep when using mate because they sleep deeper.

Digestive function and detoxification

Mate has been shown to improve digestion and repair damaged gastrointestinal tissues. It may control constipation by softening stools and stimulating intestinal contractions. Mate also may help detoxify the body by increasing water loss thru urination, digestive movements, and evacuation.

Safe for the heart

While other stimulants, like caffeine and ephedra, are feared to potentially have harmful effects on the heart, mate has been shown to actually be good for the heart. It may increase the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart during stress or exercise and may lower blood pressure and improve circulation in some people by relaxing blood vessels.

Immune support

Mate appears to boost immunity both by fighting infectious organisms and supporting immune cells, particularly white blood cells, in the body. Vitamins C and E, found in mate, are important for immune support. Unlike other herbs that may continuously stimulate the immune system, mate acts to balance immunity as a tonic. Saponins are also important chemicals in mate, which may be partially responsible for its immune-supporting effects.

Improve lung function Yerba mate also helps relieve allergies by stimulating the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids, which suppress inflammation and overactive immune responses. It also opens the respiratory passages. This is good news for athletes since these benefits aid optimal breathing and get more oxygen into the body. Mate's potential to relax muscles may make it useful for asthma since it appears to dilate the bronchi (gas absorbers in your lungs).

Hair Loss Myths & Facts

One of the best of hair loss facts is that over 80 million American men and women are suffering from hair loss. A number of factors also contribute to hair loss. Many factors that have to be inquired before going for treating hair loss are: your routine diet, various medications you are already taking including vitamins, your family history of hair loss, any affliction from illness recently, and your daily hair care habits

Enjoy the following interesting and informative facts:

  • About 10% of your hair will be resting and the rest will be growing at any given point of time.
  • One hair fiber will be able to support a weight of 100 grams.
  • It is found that use of drugs is one of the important causes of hair loss.
  • Keratin forms the main component of your hair. Keratin is also responsible for giving elasticity to your fingernails.
  • Every person will lose more than 40% of hair in a life time. That means about 100 hair per day.
  • Hair loss becomes visible only when you lose more than 50% of hair.
  • Europeans and Africans are found to have more hair loss problems than Asians.
  • More than 50% of men above the age of 50 generally suffer from hair loss.
  • There will be more than 100,000 hairs over an average scalp. Scalps with blond hair will have about 120,000; scalps with red hair will have about 80,000 hairs.

The Myth: Hair thinning comes from the mother’s side of the family. The Facts: Scientific research has proven that the genes for hair loss can come from either or both sides of the family. The best indicator you have is your immediate family. Look around—are your parents, sibling, aunts & uncles losing their hair? If so, you may also be at risk.

The Myth: Hereditary hair loss only affects men. The Facts: Women also suffer from hereditary hair loss -- nearly 30 million women in the U.S. alone. Often termed fine or thin, women’s hair goes though the same thinning process that men experience, However, women generally experience diffuse thinning starting just behind the hairline to the top or over the entire head, while men usually experience typical “male pattern baldness” – crown (or vertex) balding and/or a receding frontal hairline. Women usually experience little or no recession of the frontal hairline.

The Myth: Women only lose their hair post pregnancy or during menopause. The Facts: Although many women experience an increase in shedding after giving birth and around menopause, women can start experiencing the signs of heredity hair thinning as early as their 20’s. The signs are similar to men’s hair thinning – more hair loss on the pillow, in the drain, or on the hairbrush. However, instead of losing hair in the crown and hairline, women tend to experience a diffuse thinning that starts on the top of the head and can spread over the entire scalp.

The Myth: Stress makes your hair fall out. The Facts: Stress affects the body in many ways; it is important not to underestimate the power of stress. However, usually it takes severe, traumatic stress (like that related to a severe psychological or physical experience—a natural disaster, death in the family or crash dieting) to cause hair loss. Some diseases of the hair and scalp that cause patchy hair loss, like alopecia areata, can be precipitated or aggravated by bouts of stress. Mild stress usually doesn’t cause hair loss—in fact, usually the opposite is true!

The Myth: Any shedding of hair is an indicator of hereditary hair loss. The Facts: Normally, between 50 and 150 individual hairs are shed from the scalp every day. This is not a sign of hair loss; rather, it is a sign that hair follicles are entering their resting phase – a natural part of the follicle’s life cycle. When enough follicles do not recover from the “resting phase,” you are suffering from hair loss. Hair loss is a progressive process during which affected follicles tend to produce thinner, shorter hairs until they eventually die.

The Myth: If you’ve got hair past age 40, you’ll keep it. The Facts: Shrinking follicles and hair loss is a normal part of the body’s aging process. Just like the skin wrinkles as you age, your follicles will shrink, making your hair seem thinner. How much you lose depends on your genes. Contact the Kasia Tream today to talk about natural hair loss options.

Caring Tips for your Fall Skin

The cool weather of fall can be rough on your skin. In the fall and winter your skin deals with a lot of harsh environments, strong winds, cold air, indoor heaters, rain, snow, sleet and an overall lack of a good healthy dose of sunlight. These seasons cause dry skin that can become chapped and cracked.  But have no fear the cures to your skin’s ailments are simple.  Your skin’s goals when it is cold out should be to moisturize, exfoliate and moisturize again.  Keep moisture in mind with all the choices you make in your skin care regime.  Your skin functions differently in the cooler months so you need to change your routines.

Cleanse: Now is the time of year when you need to put away your foaming and stringent cleansers and stock up on "mild" modalities.

Suggest:   reFresh Cleanser rich with Aloe

Tone: Put away your astringents and switch to a toner for fall and winter.  Your skin needs to be soothed and balanced and not dried out further by an astringent.

Suggest:  toBalance Toner rich with Rose Damascus

Moisturize Your Face: Choose heavier crèmes in the winter than you would in the summer months.  Feel free to use your heavy eye crème around your lips and entire face.  If your skin is itching it is because the dry air is causing the moisture in the top layer of your skin to evaporate quickly.  You will need to slather those areas with extra moisture until you feel relief. Never be afraid of using bottle of jojoba oil   on your skin in fall.

Suggest: onCure Eye Cream rich with peptides   &    enMoist Moisturizing Cream rich with Apricot Oil

Moisturize Your Hands & Body: During the cold and flu season you should wash your hands liberally but be certain to apply a heavy hand crème every time you wash your hands. Shea butter, balms, butters and whipped butters are great body moisturizers in the fall and winter.

Exfoliate Your Face: Exfoliate twice per week to remove dead skin cells and allow your skin to absorb the extra moisture you are lathering on.  The central heating plays havoc on the sebum our skin normally produces, which makes our skin lose water which should be retained in the lower dermis of the skin.  Be cautious not to over exfoliate, and do so with light jojoba beads that are not harsh to the dermis.

Have you ever wondered about the areas of your skin that looks like your skin is flaking off your body?  What happens is that during the winter months there are thousands of dry skin cells ready to be sloughed off the surface and they become clumped together with oil which forms what appear to be flakes.  Don’t be flaky, exfoliate!  Exfoliate your facial skin and re-moisturize with jojoba oil!

Suggest:  soPure Moisture and Exfoliate Mask rich  in jojoba beads to brighten pigmentation.

Exfoliate Your Body: Exfoliate your body with sugar or salt scrubs that are full of rich oils or butters.  Your body will soak every ounce of  oil based body scrub.

Hydrotherapy: For a simple in home hydrotherapy, start out your day with a hot steamy shower and just as you are finishing switch the water to cold for about fifteen seconds.  Repeat the process for two minutes.  This hydrotherapy technique will revitalize your skin by stimulating the flow of blood through the skin.  During cold and flu season you can add 1-5 drops of Kasia Apothecary Single Note Essential Oils or our Kasia Blends of Peppy-mint, Lemonlift, and Lavendaire oil to the corner of the shower and let the steam create a wonderful aromatherapy treatment.

Sunscreen:  Don’t say goodbye to your sunscreen just because summer is over. Before you leave your house, apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or more. This will protect your skin from the elements. Alternatively, use a sunscreen with a moisturizer.

Suggest:  Good Day Sunshine Sunscreen rated TOP 10 by EWG!

Back to School with Colloidal silver

Although the basic school supplies and a nutritious lunch are necessities that most parents know children need, other tools for a good immune system are often overlooked. With so many supplements on the market, ranging from herbal immune boosters to vitamin and mineral regimens, it is hard for a parent to decide what to choose when it comes to helping their children stay healthy during the school year. There is one supplement, however, that stands above the rest when it comes to keeping children healthy: colloidal silver.

This supplement is the one supplement that is capable of meeting all your child’s needs. Not only is it at the head of its class in immunity support, but it also works as an antimicrobial and has regenerative properties to aid the body in recuperating after an illness has already set in. In addition, it can be used as a health support aid along with other antimicrobials or pain relievers. The best part is that colloidal silver is a clear liquid that looks, tastes, feels, and smells like water, so it is an easy supplement to give your children.

The difference between those children who never seem to get sick and those who are constantly ill has to do with more than a matter of avoiding germs. All the preventative measures in the world can be taken to protect a child from illness, but if he or she does not have a strong immune system, the parent will be fighting a continuous battle to keep the child healthy. Unlike other immune supplements that are only geared for use at the beginning of a cold or flu, colloidal silver can be used every day to continuously support the immune system.

It was observed as far back as 1907 that silver increases the production of white blood cells. This observation has been recently confirmed in many studies. Researchers have also found that silver may help white blood cells to intercept immune threats effectively by increasing their ability to track, recognize, and survey incoming threats. All of these things cumulatively enhance the immune system, a factor that is very important in keeping children healthy for the long run. It has also been accepted for a long time that silver is effective in fighting a range of microbes such as bacteria, viruses, and fungus. This is contributed to silver ions rupturing the outer membrane of the infectious agent, thereby exposing the internal components to the immune system. When colloidal silver is applied to vulnerable areas such as the eyes, throat, and nose, it can act as a first line of defense in eliminating microbes before they can enter the body. By applying this in the morning before school, microbes that may come into contact with those areas can be eliminated. Silver can also be applied on cuts and scrapes to provide a healthy antiseptic support, as well as faster healing.

In order to decide which silver is right for your children, you must keep in mind that not all silver preparations are the same. A good colloidal silver should have small silver particles that are sub-nanometer in size. Remember that colloidal silver is a dietary supplement to support your health, not to cure diseases. If serious issues are occurring, be sure to contact your health care professional first.

Facts About Colloidal Silver

A colloid is a substance where ultra-small particles (ranging from 5-100 nanometers (nm) in size --a nanometer = billionth of a meter) are suspended in some other substance. The particles don't dissolve in the other substance.

Colloidal Silver, then, is made up of ultra-small particles of very pure silver (purer than sterling silver) that are suspended in distilled water. These particles range in size from 5 to 15 nm. The particles of silver are uniformly charged with the same charge so that they repel each other.

Thus, because the silver particles' mass is small enough, the repelling force of the like-charge keeps the particles suspended. Colloidal Silver helps the body eliminate pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites by disabling the specific enzymes that microorganisms need to breathe. When the enzmye is disabled, the microorganism quickly suffocates and dies.

Colloidal silver also enhances the immune system by helping the healing of normal cells and enhancing the lymphatic flow and drainage, which removes toxins from tissues.

This improves oxygenation and regeneration of the cells. It also enhances the energy flow in the body.

It will enhance:

  • Homeopathic treatment
  • Acupuncture
  • All natural healing modalities

It will not contradict or interfere with any allopathic drugs. There is no known toxicity to collidal silver whatsoever at any amount. There are also no known side effects from a true colloidal silver. Silver is considered to be one of the most universal antibiotic substances known and according to Jim Powell in a Science Digest article "an antibiotic kills perhaps 7 different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop." [Jim Powell, Our Mightiest Germ Fighter, Science Digest, March 1978.]

Colloidal Silver can be used to maintain health or obtain relief from:

  • Sinus problems
  • Skin problems (including rashes, scrapes, abrasions, fungus, athletes foot, etc.)
  • Moderate to severe infections
  • Earaches
  • Infections
  • Colds/flu
  • Sore throats
  • Headaches
