A service above
the economy

There are two distinct forces at play when it comes to business at Kasia Organic Salon.

There’s the obvious, of course, that Kassie Kuehl’s three-month-old venture is located at 50th & Bryant, the corner still recovering from a fire that just knocked out five popular businesses. Neighbors are reeling, customer traffic is down significantly and Kuehl said Kasia’s bottom line definitely has been affected.

Kasia Organic Salon
Opened: February 2010
Location: 822 W. 50th St.

Phone: 386-4044
Number of employees: 4 (but growing)
Optimism level: 5

“In a frugal consumer market, we’ve now lost even the frugal foot traffic,” she said.

Yet Kasia also is at the brink of growth. The customer base is large enough now that Kuehl wants to hire additional help, probably one or two more employees within the coming months. Perhaps more importantly, Kuehl said, she’s getting phone calls from people around the country asking for advice on what her business strives to do, keep chemicals out of the salon industry.

“What we’re doing is going to be the market in five years,” Kuehl said.

In her view, that second factor trumps the first, if not every other economic factor. She’s not trying to be defiant; she just offers a service that’s both rare and needed, she said. Kasia isn’t about providing a luxury.

“We have a different kind of clientele,” Kuehl said. “People are coming to us with no option because they’re having allergic reactions to everything.”

Her optimism comes from several sources, in particular the phone calls from around the country. But she also has seen an up-tick in page views of her salon and natural products’ websites.

“I know the interest is out there,” she said. “I wish [the business] could be bigger for people.”

To get there, she’s keeping her focus on the grassroots level. That means getting neighbors involved and expanding beyond simply giving a haircut to educating the public. Kasia already has hosted a pair of workshops — most recently on the importance of hormone health — while another is on the schedule. Kuehl consults directly with her clients on at-home remedies. A special make-up event is planned for the end of this month.

“We’re just going to continue to pull in the community,” she said. “We’re excited. I think it’s going to be a good summer.”

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN)--Minneapolis organic hair expert and educator Kassie kuehl announced today she will expand her salon services and add 6 full-time staff in a new location called Kasia Organic Salon opening late February at 822 W. 50th-in the Lynhurst neighborhood of Minneapolis. The salon joins the ranks among a number of burgeoning businesses at the up-and-coming corner of 50th and Bryant Ave. including Black Bird Café, Heidi’s, Patina and the new Shop Local. After renting her first salon chair, the space caused her to suffer severe migraine headaches due to the toxic effects of the products she was surrounded by daily.  Kuehl has since made it her mission to provide salon services for women that do not harm the body, particularly when it comes to hair coloring.

“Every day the work I do for my customers affects their body’s largest organ — their skin so it’s my personal duty to treat my clients with services and products that nurture them, not harm them,” Kuehl says.  “It’s also my desire to inform women about what certain products can do for them, and also educate them on the whys as well.  This is especially important for women at risk for breast cancer or trying to get pregnant; they need to understand they have options that support their health and not cause it to break down for the sake of beauty,” Kuehl continued.

Kasia Organic Salon uses hair color that contains no ammonia or mono-ethanolamine (MEA), two common carcinogenic chemicals found in many hair color products.  It also offer its own organic skin care line as well as a number of other hair, skin and body products that are also organic or natural and contain zero of the top 10 most harmful chemicals additives in beauty products linked to conditions such as fertility problems, endocrine system dysfunction, thyroid conditions or cancer.

The salon space itself contains low VOC paint to reduce toxic vapors in the air as well as EMF protection devices on each appliance to minimize the cumulative effects of electric and electro-magnetic waves. Kuehl is also in the process of putting together a salon-recycling program for supplies and used containers as well as old hair dryers.

Opening week specials include 20% off any one product and a First Time Client Special of $20 off any haircut, color or massage.  Interested parties can book an appointment or find out more by calling 612-386-4044 or visiting

With the beautiful temped weather the past few days, I can bet you've had your windows open trying to get all the "legging virus bugs" out of your home....

Over the last month so many clients have been asking me why their hair has suddenly become so dry and dull ? ? ?

Dust and Minerals.

Yep, it's darn annoying, dirty, all this dust is dehydrating your hair and Skin. The ultra fine dust particles are sucking the natural oils and moisture up off our skin, and leaving a layer of dirt on your hair making it knotty & dull.

The solution is . . . . Give your hair a deep conditioning treatment (Hamadi Mask Treatment) to replace lost nutrients, & it will be back shining in no time.

Masking with Hamadi is a perfect weekly indulgence or daily essential for hair in need of repair, replenishment and color maintenance. Avocado oil silkens and aloe vera hydrates from roots to ends. Leaves the hair feeling sensuous and touchable. Made with 100% Organic Essential Oils and Plant Extracts. Completely biodegradable. Absolutely no artificial ingredients. No perfumes or colors. Tested on Actresses - Never on animals.

In spending time with clients, I am highly aware of how environmental conditions in their area affect their clients’ hair and skin. Over 85 percent of the population in the U.S., according to the Water Quality Association, is bathing with hard water.

Minerals found in water at home are continuously exposed to hair during bathing. Since hot or warm water is usually selected to wash hair, the cuticle is opened, allowing positively charged elements, such as minerals, to get inside the cuticle and attach to the protein.

Three ways calcium affects hair:

  1. Create a wall that blocks salon chemicals from processing properly
  2. Build-up on the scalp causing flaking, often thought of as dandruff. These deposits are much like the “bathtub rig” associated with hard water and bath soap
  3. Increased hair loss by clogging the mouth of the follicle causing hair to break off and coat the scalp, blocking further hair growth.

A Soft Water generator is NOT always the answer. Ask me why...

Q. How Do I Know What Hair Style to Choose?

* If you are wanting to have a NEW LOOK then the first step is to start looking at pictures ..You can do this in advance through magazines or on the internet.. You might be suprised how quickly you discover a common style that draws your attention, even if you previously had no clear idea in mind.

* If you've got a picture, bring it in.. don't feel shy it's a great way for you to easily explain to your stylist what your thinking.

* Ensure you give your stylist as much information as possible about your hair texture and problem areas. As well as letting them know how much effort you put into your hair at home and how much maintenance you are willing to do.

* If you are still unsure of exactly what it is that you want from your stylecut or colour, let your stylist know what it is that you Don't Want, often it is much easier to tell us what you don't like or what hasn't worked for you in the past.
